A friend of mine is coming back to town for a few months and wants to run an Iron Hero's adventure. Until last week I had never even heard of Iron Hero's beyond it being a Monte Cook product. So I bought the book and read through it, now I have gamed for over 20 years but am a total newbie to this system and we are starting to build our characters.

The campaign is going to be in Eberron on the Seren islands, seems a little counter intuitive for a very low magic system but there you go. We will be playing members of the various barbarian tribes and it will be a low to no magic campaign. Although the Bereseker looks to be ideal for this game it looks kind tough to play for my first character. Right now I am leaning towards a Hunter or a Man at arms and the tactics of the mind feat looks good for either one.

Now my questions for you fine gamers out there who are a lot more familar with the system are which are the better classes to play in a barbarian society set mostly in the forest and jungles, and what skill groups and/or feats are good for a build.

Oh, and any other advice for playing in an Iron Hero's campaign would be appreciated

looks like there aren't a lot of Iron Heros fans out there Mr. darkfable. No answers in 2 days.... aw well I guess i'll have to think for myself.[:)]

I am leaning towards man at arms as well, but if we all play men at arms would it be like everyone in a regular D&D adventure playing rangers, or could we all customize our characters enough to so we will cover everything we need. Man at Arms is the ultimately customizable PC.

My other thought is the hunter and that one is the Iron Heros answer to the ranger(more or less).

The MAA is so crazy customizable that I think it will be fine. I know Jesse runs Iron Heros, just might not have popped into RP forum lately :)

I've read reviews of this game and it sounds interesting. If you want to write a little more of it later when you've played a little I'd be interested to read!

I don't know if IH is a little too low-magic to my taste, but on the other hand I enjoy games where magic is less everyday and more subtle in nature (I'm great fan of GURPS VooDoo -system).

What disturbs me in reviews is that (almost) all the classes seem to be some kind of warriors, I enjoy games where players can affect the world also as nobles, merchants, politicans etc.

I believe combat -system has still lots of hitpoints, or is there more aspects in combat so players can't rely on their hitpoints (hey, I've still got 40hp, I can take at least 3 more hits!)?

well speaking just from reading the book, the thief class is more roleplaying oriented. Unlike the thief in regular D&D thieves in Iron heros seem to be more conmen and tricksters than burglers and muggers.
They master social skills and feats, they get abilities like beguiling flattery, alias, and force of personality. The thief prefers not to get into combat, although he does have a few abilites that do help when he fights.

There are no cross class skills in IR so anyone can take the social skills (they just can't progress as fast as the Thief). And with feats trees like devious manipulator and political master mind I think political roleplaying has a presences as well.

Having said all that our DM is going set the adventure on the Seren Islands and we will be members of the religious fanatical barbarin tribes so we will probably see more than our fair share of combat...... but you never know.

Almost forgot, about Hitpoints. with a definite lack of healing magic all Heros have a reserve pool of hitpoints equal to there regular HP that you can exchage point for point after a battle. Your reserve pool fills at your level+ con bonus per day. So a 1st level Hero may start with 13 hp and 13 reserve points, he takes 7 damage in a battle and uses his reserve pool(after the battle) to 'shrug' off the damage raising his HP back to 13 but lowering his reserve to 5. Assuming he takes no more damage when he rests for the night he gains back 1 + his con bonus to his reserve, and if he still had regular HP damage he would get back 1 point (just his level). You can also use heal skills to regain reserve points. You can usually only use Reserve points after a battle but some class abilities and feats let you use reserve points in battle.

Hey, sorry I didn't see this thread until now. I actually run a weekly Iron Heroes campaign, which is a big reason why I never come to the RPG forums, they mostly just talk D&D here. I will have a more thorough response to this thread later today. I will also point lalato towards it. :)

I am not gone.

*Bump from oblivion*

After forgetting the whole game for a while, I remembered Iron Heroes again and am going to buy it soon. I'm curious about what kind of experiences you've had with the system with longer time and is there new people playing the game :)

Several sources suggest that Arcanist -class isn't good as it is, and while I don't know much about it yet, I'm preparing to create a system of my own or adapting another system - maybe from LoTR -RPG? Gurps VooDoo has lots of stuff but I'm not 100% sure it fits the game.

Even if magic is difficult, I haven't heard anywhere what kind of spells casters can do. Is there fireballs and magic missiles, or is the magic more subtle in nature.

Has anyone done much crossing with D&D creatures and other stuff from the game? How does it work?

Btw Maijstral, your description was very enlightning, thanks for it even if this comes pretty late :)
