| "well written" is a highly subjective term. However, most Salvatore books are pretty good. | Depending on how far back you want to go they had a series about the Harpers a long while ago that had several good reads among them. Some of the newer novels in the FR that I might suggest are below;
- Ghostwalker (based on the PrC, The Fighters Series) - The Sembia series is a pretty good read and covers several books; Halls of Stormweather (an anthology), Shadow's Witness (Book 2) by Paul S. Kemp, The Shattered Mask (Book 3) by Richard Lee Byers, Black Wolf (Book 4) by Dave Gross, Heirs of Prophecy (Book 5) by Lisa Smedman, Sands of the Soul (Book 6) by Voronica Whitney-Robinson, Lord of Stormweather (Book 7) by Dave Gross - The Priests series is a good twist on several clerics/faiths; Lady of Poison, Mistress of Night, Queen of the Depths, Maiden of Pain

| I second the motion for the Elminster series and Songs and Swords. The Cormyr series by Ed Greenwood and Jeff Grubb is very good too. Salvatore has some good books (Icewind Dale Trilogy, Dark Elf Trilogy) but I've gotten really annoyed with his writing style about 1/2 way through the last couple I read from the Legacy of the Drow series. That series seems to really have suffered from poor editing- its like Salvatore's fame at that point caused the editors to just pass it through and not even catch all the typographical mistakes, let alone the inane plot twists.
I recommend the following website to get a good picture of how the various trilogies and series relate to one another (by subject grouping and by author): http://www.o-love.net/realms/ This site even has a fairly complete timeline that places all the novel titles in Faerunian history. | | Champion of the Bone Naga (There's just so much roleplaying to be done with a large skeletal snake!)

| Elaine Cunningham's Arilyn Moonblade books and Liriel Baenre Books are great.
The first were originally released as part of the Harper series and recently rereleased under the forgotten realms:song and swords. I berlieve there are 5 books in the series now.
the Liriel Baenre novels are Forgotten Realms:starlight and shadows and there are 3 out IIRC. If you like drizzt novels you should like these.

| If you go over to http://www.candlekeep.com/ there is plenty of info on all the books as well as reviews and some of the authors even go to the site and answer questions from time to time.
I really loved the Erevis Cale trilogy, also the recent (on-going) trilogies: House of Serpents by Lisa Smedman and The Year of Rogue Dragons by Richard Lee Byers are also excellent reads. These two author along with Paul Kemp (author of the Erevis Cale books) were involved in the Sembia series. Also the recent trilogy by Richard Baker The Last Mythal has been a easy read.
Realm shaking event novels are most notably: The Avatar Quintet and the Return of the Archwizards trilogy. Lesser RSE trilogies are The Threat from the Sea, War of the Spider Queen and The Empires Trilogy.
The Cormyr Saga and Starlight and Shadow could both be considered to have some major implications on the world as well.
I've enjoyed most of the series out there RAS is a favourite author of many, but there are some strong haters of him as well.
I'll let the other here and at candlekeep tell you what else to read, enjoy! | | "I was sittin' here eatin' my muffin, drinkin' my coffee, replayin' the incident in my head, when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity." - Jules Winnfield Sales/Trades Bad (1): Ironfist Boulderbender Trades/Sales completed (8.): Danthl, Dafrca, Garyaxe, qillan_dvra, realmaster, Vandal_Savage, cavedweller, unearthed arcana. | Not that I'm necessarily an authority on well-written books (cough, cough, Bachelor's in English), but these are my favorites from the Realms:
The first Drizzt trilogy (Homeland/Exile/Sojourn)--it might just be me, but I've found most of Salvatore's later Drizzt stuff to be lacking to some degree.
The War of the Spider Queen hexology--if you want to read about a band of thoroughly evil dark-elves cavorting around the Underdark and/or surface world and/or Abyss. [:D]
The Avatar trilogy (Shadowdale/Tantras/Waterdeep)--Good stuff. The subsequent two books are, IMO, best considered separately.
The Finder's Stone trilogy (Azure Bonds/The Wyvern's Spur/Song of the Saurials)--out of print for awhile, I believe, but worth tracking down.
I've had a good deal of luck tracking down the older volumes at local used bookstores; most of them have a sizable Realms section piled under 'F' of the Fantasy/Sci-Fi shelves. | | "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."

| I have read a pile of Realm books and the ones that I think are good are: The Pool Trilogy (Radiance, Darkness and Twilight) The Avatar Trilogy..its a must "amazing read" The Dark Trilogy(Homeland,Exile and Sojourn) I will agree this was best of the Drizzt books. The Finder's Stone Trilogy... great books about the return of the god Moander. The Cormyr Trilogy... is also a must read for Realm lovers.
Can't comment on the War of the Spider Queen as I'm waiting for it all too released in softcover before I start. I believe one more book too be released in softcover.(if not soon)[:p] | | Champion of the Peryton Vindicated Champion : Pit Fiend, Devourer DW: Duergar Priest RPG Only!!!! | Hmm, I defintely agree with many of the above books, but some of my personal favorites:
Dark Elf Trilogy Icewind Dale Trilogy Cleric Quintet Cormyr: A Novel Pool of Radiance (even if you don't read the rest, this one is great) Several of the Harper novels. Ring of Winter (a Boccob's Blessed Book used creatively!)
Other names escaping me.

If thats the case and you still havent read it. I HIGHLY recommend the Cleric Quintet, to me its better than any of his Drizzt stuff (this coming from a Drizzt fan) I'm hoping that he eventually makes another cleric series.
War of the Spider Queen is a great series. Of course you're tired of Drow so I wouldn't go out and pick it up just yet. There seems like there could be a lot of spin-off novels if they do it right too. This series opened me up to a lot of the other FR writers, unfortunately they haven't written anything else that intriques me yet.
I never got around to finishing the first book but The Last Mythal trilogy seems pretty decent as well (Forsaken House/Farthest Reach/__)

| I strongly recommend 'Evermeet: Isle of the ELves', by Elaine Cunningham. It is a highly comprehensive history of the elves in FR, and ties into Elaine's other books (Arylin and Laeral and their adjuncts are either referenced or minor characters).
I rarely buy FR novels, but that one definitely made my bookshelf! | | Champion of the Flumph!!!

It's a fairly good read Vash. One of the best examples of a 'good' cleric turning over to evil as one of the protagonist in the series. All about mercenaries, war and deceit. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

Let me second that highly recommended. A great series.
And Ed Greenwood is usually a good read, even if he has fallen too much in love with Eliminster...

tru dat. [:D]
Fortunately for me, my public library has quite a few novels and an online catalog for the whole state. I select what books I might be interested in (from Amazon, or now from this thread) and do a library search. If I get a hit, I request it and they send me a postcard when it is ready to be picked up from my local library. For free (nice to see my taxes used for something I can use...)
