| Just saw a thread like this on ENWorld and was hoping to get some real humdingers from over here.
My own examples.
The Instrumentalist (no, not a bard, he was a 2e psionicist) Sickeo-2 (a 1e jester, and no, there never was a Sickeo-1) Th-bb-phthphth-bbt--duh--me (just do a raspberry, pause, say "duh" and then "me"; this was an orc character very briefly played by a friend of mine)
Here's one I've never played, but really hope to: Plan-B (a rogue who thinks far too highly of his ability to save the party after they've screwed up, again)

| Well, one of my players has 2 silly names for his characters:
Thunk: His ½orc ranger with low INT (-6). Aj-nin: for his ninja (it'll come to you in a second).
Other than that I have never been witness to any other names from players that seemed silly; none that I can recall right now anyway. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| lol. One time at one of the anniversary places my cousin's told me about a 12-person campaign and a couple of the names were goofy:
Dwarfy McDwarfydwarf - dwarf fighter
Shaniqua - halforc female dancer
Rad Sumptuous - Human wizard with a HUGE mustache
Highlights -
Dwarfy was shrunk and criticalled a naga with his miniature bite attack for 3 damage (woot!)
Rad Sumptuous (can't spell correct heh) was the lame wizard who never contributed and had 10 scrolls of invisiblity.

| I once played a Gnome Hexblade called "Reubin Thaddeus Vanferker III". He changed his name to sound more impressive and important, and so everyone in the party calls him "Pat" just to irk him. Needless to say this only added to his anger issues...
Also, the folks I play with loved this halfling NPC:
Hamilton Beefings - the worlds biggest halfling, he was so big he was considered a medium creature.

| A long ways back we had a guy who used these bizarre name charts and came up with Brackkakk - for his 18 charisma cleric. It translated to "beatiful woman."
We had another guy who has a history of naming his characters after the pupppets on Seasame Street. The names include the rather grouchy Oscarr and Elmo who was very tickelish.

| I simply won't allow silly names in my game. (At least to start. Nicknames genuinely earned during play are another matter.) Unless you're playing a slapstick game, it's just too disruptive to the mood.
Much more insidious than goofy names, in my opinion, are names stolen from other fantasy sources. One of the players in one of my groups has a habit of just stealing names straight out of gaming fiction. Since I read very little gaming fiction, I often go for weeks before I catch it ... and then it annoys the bejesus out of me.
(Should "bejesus" be capitalized?)
It's just not that hard to come up with good, or at least serviceable, names. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| The campaign I am currently DMing has some lame names for familiar/mounts.
The raven familiar is named Raven. The same PC's light warhorse is named Moose (for variety from Horse, I guess...)
Several others took the last names of their characters in reverse order and named their horses that.
One player gave his paladin a strange name. Remblack de Sleeper. The last name is what baffled me. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

Yup. I know. [:D] But it's all in the pronunciation. M-eh-rd (en francais) as opposed to M-ur-d (dumb tank). Because I'm sure if you called him merde, he'd beat the merde out of you. [)]

| Silly names can be fun if done well.
I think it was one of the Cunningham books that had the Dwarf named Jill (I think that was it), he always said how everyone in his family was named Jill, and though it was cheesy and cutsey at first, it worked. Silly names can work. People give their kids in real life silly names all the time. I went to school with a girl named Jeckyl Ann Hyde (I joke you not), if the name is so silly it becomes a disturbance thats different, but I got no problem with a silly name if used properly. | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

| | Stuff like this would never fly with the RPG group I play with. Back in my time with EQ though I had for a short time a gnome cleric named "Elron Hubbard" who carried a couple books for hand held items that were explained to be copies of his new book called "Dyin Medics". I RPed the character with the personality of a televangelist faithhealer. | Speaking of naming horses, one of the kids in my son's Warcraft game is named Dayin. Dayin's horse was named, "Dayin's Horse." But, after a few sessions, we all began to notice that this horse was a more effective combatant than we were. So, the horse got renamed "Dayin's Horse 3000" (who knows why 3000 istead of any other number, I believe someone suggested XP).
I've also seen Tea-Biscuit and Slomgoolia as horse names.

| I've heard tales from a friend of a very unserious game with an elf ranger named Legoflamb...an extreme naturlist/pacifist.
In my very early days as a DM the names were bad when I had just introduced the game. The two characters we had were a theif and a very abused wizard.
The thief was named Clawford (the player's last name was Crawford) but the wizard....was uncreatively named "The Dark Wizard". Of coarse, with a unseriouse rouge in an unserious game the wizards name very quickly almost officially changed to "The Dark Wizzer". He was always called that or "Wizzer" for short. It was subsequently lengthened to "He who wizzes in the dark".
Which posed the contiued (yes, seriousely) of why he would need to wizz in the dark when he could just turn invisible. (one of his signature spells)
Anyway, the player of said wizard carried the nicname of "Wizzer" for atleast 5 years....[^] | | High Priest of the Mercury Dragon (Prayers all all I have...) | About 15 years ago I had a player named Bob the Fighter. Bob was pretty disruptive to a game with other characters named Dalsinthus, Tyrn, Wanderer, etc. After that I disallowed non-serious names, unless they were earned as a result of in character play.
I ran a couple Eberron sessions last fall. One player ran a Warforged Fighter that started out as "nameless" and eventually became known as "Tank". I wasn't too thrilled with it, but it didn't seem to hurt the game like "Bob the Fighter" did. | | Have: Cat; Want: Storm Giant Champion of Anything Dragonlance Before trading, please check the Disputed Trades Thread

| We had this one guy in a campaign who refused to name his dwarven cleric. After about 6 sessions with this very silent player (and character), we named the character 'Stone Cold' -- after the logo Paul wore on his shirts 5 days out of 6.
Other 'cute' names: Spark -- my Int 6 Half-Orc Cleric. It's actually short for Sparkle Skullcrusher, but she has problems with 2 syllable words in Common... Widget -- my Warforged Scout. It's small, mechanical, and useful in all sorts of situations...
Animals in our campaigns fare rather badly. We've found that if you name a creature, it dies rather abruptly, so we try not to. Our priest of gluttony, however, named his horses Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. He had them chalked up into the correct cuts, too... | | Champion of the Flumph!!!

Skippy did a lot of headbutting too. | | John
