| | Looking for opinions on this book. Worth buying even if not using an aquatic themed campaign? I'm a fan of the other "environment" books but I'm not sure about this one. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. | I am not a fan of the books, but if you are looking at doing a water based game... then this is the book for you. If not... then is is just so many new lightning and water spells, feats, and prestige classes.

Meh. Maybe?
I bought it, used it for some initial setup, and it's collecting dust. The crunch was good--the fluff, not so much.
If you plan on having a lot of ship-based combats, or ship-to-ship combat, it's good.
Similarly, if you want underwater adventures, they look great too.
For me, regular combat is challenging enough right now. Trying to think about what happens when the fighter makes a sundering bull rushing charge of doom and falls with the Sahuagin Druid over the side of the moving ship (grappled with another ship) into the water and down into the depths of the forbidden city of reverse underwater gravity is just a bit much for me at the moment.
Ship stats and descriptions were helpful. I'm not sure if they were 30 bucks helpful--but we're not at the ship-to-ship combat phase of the campaign yet. And the adventures looked okay--but again, I don't fancy too much with the underwater or in-water action just yet. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. Now with micro scrubbing bubbles. | IMHO: Stormwrack, Sandstorm and Frostburn were 3 of the worst D&D books made by WotC. There are balance issues, and they really don't handle what I wanted.
The concept held a lot of potential: Detailed rules for a certain campaign environment. Instead, the books are filled with feats, spells and monsters that are mostly useless in any campaign not specifically set in the environment of the book, or that suffer from horrible balance problems.
If I had my choice between 3 booster of DDM or one of these books ... I'd enjoy the figures. | | Champion of Meepo _*_ Myztek on the Wizards Boards. _*_ (2206 DDM on 03/06/06) Please note: The use of the indicates an attempt at humor ... often a bad attempt. | I really enjoyed both Sandstorm -- which I've used a fair amount -- and Frostburn -- which I intend to use. Online reviews are largely positive, as well.
I bought Stormwrack, but haven't read it yet. I'm almost certain that it would have been invaluable back when I was running my Freeport campaign. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| I like the environmental books personally, but they're not all that generally useful in most games, you really need to be featuring the terrain to get a lot out of them.
If I had to pick the worst books they've done, it would easily be the "Races of..." books (minus Races of Eberron and Races of Faerun.) They have about 15 pages of useful contents each, if that. | | Anson on WotC boards

I tend to agree with that assessment. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

| My take on the book was that it is good for its purpose, waterbased encounters. Kiddoc, is correct in the descriptions as well. The crunch is there but for $30 USD...maybe not so much.
If you intend to run envior-counters then I would suggest picking it up for ideas. I know that with the other two enviro books I had to tinker with them to make the rules seamless for my games. But I want the enviros to be something the party takes into consideration....as always this is just me.....[:D] | | Ambassador of FUN!!!

That's what I was thinking. Not worth the full $30, but maybe worth picking up for much less than that on ebay. Just have to be patient. [:D] | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

| | don't get this book. if you want to have ship to ship combat, or boarding actions or rules for buying and selling cargo in different ports, or effects of wind and weather, you are not going to find it in stormwrack. i recommend seas of blood instead. i run a nautical campaign and end up using seas of blood more than the DMG. | | Champion of Phanatons. | |

| | With all the enviroment books, Stormwrack included, they're really good for bits and pieces, generating lots of helpful DM things and such. Like others have commented, not worth 30 bones but if you can score it cheap then its not bad to pick up and mine for usage in your campaign/characters. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing? | |
