| I'm looking to pick up a few more supplements to flesh out my background in this setting. I have and really like Serpent Kingdoms (mainly for the writing about the different serpent races, but the new Monsters section is really cool too), although you have to print out the few accompanying maps from the Wizards website.
What is your favorite? Please list 3rd/3.5 edition and 2nd/earlier edition material (if you wish) separately.

| The fact that Serpent Kingdoms had no map(s) was a HUGE drawback given the fact that even realms learned people like me have no clue where Ss'khanaja is.
Magic of Faerun was an awesome book. It's interesting how many of the ideas in it have been included in other books. It's a testament to how it was so 1) portable, and 2) just good stuff. | |

| the Volo books are pretty good, they read like a real world travel guide. Volo's guide to waterdeep is almost a must have for anyone who wants to run an adventure in the city.

| Well sticking with 3rd edition supplements Magic of Faerun was great, but if you're looking for books to flesh out a character, then it depends on what your looking for.
Player's Guide and the FRCS are both musts for the basics.
Races of Faerun is great if your using one of the races in it.
Any of the settings books would be great if your playing in that region. (Personally I really loved Shining South.)
Both the Champion books lacked a certain something, so I'd throw them in as low priority books.
Faiths and Pantheon's is a great book but if fleshing out your faith isn't that important then neither is this book.
My favourite 2nd Ed book is probably the same as DStad's the Draconomicon! That book ruled! Can't wait for 'Dragons of Faerun'!
Also a favourite of mine for 3e is Lost Empires of Faerun, it just gave me so many ideas for adventure plots. | |

| I love the players guide for the realms .. is awesome.
Wasn't a huge fan of the Races of Faerun, thought it was some repeat of some of the stuff in the player guide.
Monsters of Faerun love this book.
As for classics can not go wrong with the Undermountain and The North box set. | |

| | I think it would depend on where you are in Faerun. My party has been mainly in the Silver Marches area. I'm one of those who thinks the supplement for this area was really well written. It really fleshes out the area, and we've run up against alot of the characters from this book. Including one of the blue dragons from the Morueme's Cave. | |

| I'm running a campaign in the Silver Marches currently. The party started in Everlund, but they'll probably end up in Yartar before long and maybe someday in the region near Waterdeep. Thus I was thinking of picking up the new Waterdeep supplement.
I'll have to check out Lost Empires of Faerun- sounds great. I have Magic of Faerun but haven't had time to look through it all. I'll have to check out Shining South too for a possible future campaign.
I've been using the Volo's guide to the North .pdf and The North .pdf for the current campaign (downloaded from Wizards site). I'll have to check out the other Volo's guides as well. I noticed that you can purchase and download a number of .pdfs for 2nd Ed. FR material from rpgnow.com. Does anyone have other recommendations for 2nd Ed. supplements that give you lots of adventure ideas without being dominated by a dungeon crawl (such as the Undermountain stuff- I'm not knocking it since I haven't tried it, but I don't anticipate running a dungeon crawl for awhile)?

| I'm not sure if its 2nd or 3rd edition but the Elministers Ecologies series are good sorce materials for wilderness adventures. They weren't wildly popular so only half a dozen or so were made but they give you background information,adventuring ideas and little 'secrets' about specific areas in Faerun.
2nd edition also has the Moonsea source book, the Anauroch, and the Great Glacier. All soft cover and about 10 to 12 dollars when I bought them. I don't know if you can get them pdf or what they may cost today but I think they are well worth what I paid for them in background materials or those 3 areas. | | | |

| | Well, since I just started running an Unapproachable East area campaign, that book is getting a lot of use now. It has a lot of good background info and detailed maps. Magic of Faerun is also good... I agree that it really depends what you want to get out of the book - background/setting info? character info? different races? | |

I actually just got a copy of The North recently along with Under Illefarn. Yes both were in preparation for an Age of Worms campaign. [:D]
Also Grabbed Elminster's Ecologies App1, still looking for the box set and App2. My PDF's will have to do until I find the real thing.

Its got a ton of fluff about the area. Only a few feats, prestige classes, but GREAT info on the area, weather, and a series of small adventures at the end that can be done apart or that you can tie together. Its just a great area book. | |

| Silver Marches should still be in print. At least I've seen a few copies at a couple of gaming stores within the last few weeks. I bought mine at a gaming store last fall.
It comes with a fold-out map of the region from about Nesme (including all of the River Surbrin) to the western edge of Anauroch (West-East) and from the Spine of the World to about Yartar (North-South), including about 1/2 of the High Forest and the northern part of the Fallen Lands to the East. The map also has insets with overviews of Everlund, Sundabar, Silverymoon, Citadel Adbar, Citadel Felbarr, and the Underdark in the North. There's also a map of the town of Newfort on the regular book pages. Each of the short adventures at the end of the book include 1 or 2 small area maps and 1 or 2 close-up adventure maps such as cavern/dungeon/fort lay-outs. There are lists of weather effects and random encounter lists by sub-region. Then there's a bunch of fluff in the chapters about the various sub-regions, the various cities, politics and intrigue, standing armies and warfare in the region, and evil powers in the area. All in all, tons of stuff in one book. | |

| IMO, Serpent Kingdom's was great. The amount of fluff in that book was staggering in 3.x terms. Not to mention I love Yuan-Ti. [:D]
Other good books are Races of Faerun and Lost Empires, mainly for the same reason. I'll take fluff over crunch any day. | |

| | I just received Waterdeep: City of Splendors for the holidays and while I'm running an Eberron campaign currently, I've found that it's a great resource for any game with a major urban component. I think it's well written and it provides a lot of possibilities that can be ported to other campaigns. Since my game began in Sharn, I'm getting a lot of use out of it. | |

| | I suppose some on the design/devolopment team at Wizards for the Forgotten Realms setting might feel that the plethora of novels helps round out the Realms fluff. While I enjoy reading some of the novels, they don't compete with providing fleshed out adventure locales and ideas- the best of the fluff from setting-specific gaming supplements. Plus it seems a bit silly to copy novel storylines for campaign arc purposes. But I do find an inspiration sometimes for specific encounters from reading the novels, and they do provide a general feel of the different regions of Faerun. Still, the more fluff in the campaign-specific sourcebooks, the better. For players and DMs alike, we need more emphasis on the role-playing and less on the roll-playing. | |

| I don't know where the two terms originated (It seems to somehow parallel breakfast cereal- like Frosted Miniwheats, crunchy good-for-you whole wheat on one side, sugary frosting on the other).
"Crunch" in gaming terms is anything that impacts of the rules of the game including feats, prestige classes, new base character classes, new spells, or any other kind of new rules (swift actions, etc.).
"Fluff" is anything that describes adventure locales, cities, societies, different NPC groups, monster tribes, fully detailed adventures, adventure hook ideas. This category also includes maps and other peripheral tools that aid in fleshing out the gaming world but don't necessarily translate into anything that involves players or DMs rolling dice to determine outcomes. | |

| Sadly I split ways with alot of my old 2nd edition FR Material but of those that I had, I really like these;
- The Old Empires (covered all the ancient human civs like Mulhorandi and others). Great historic details that could be cooked up in to a campaign or for PC history flavor.
- The Bloodstone Lands (covered the upper northeast countries of Damara, Vassa etc.) Lots of little plot hangers and tidbits for the DM.
Some of the newer material;
- The Silver Marches (would have to agree this one is top notch of those they've published to date).
- The Unapproachable East (I'm a fan of the Rotting Man and Red Wizards but some of the historic background and current timeline info they include is great for campaign material.

The problem is that with 2E books being a 5$ download, I can't justify spending $35 on a book that reprints fluff from 2E. (And some FR books do in fact essentially reprint text.) That is also why I didn't like Silver Marches, by the way. Forgotten Realms fans already know all about Bruennor Battlehammer. I don't need extensive documentation on Drizzt and friends, thank you.
What I did like about Silver Marches was the new fluff and new crunch. NPC's like Xara Tanthlar (sp?), the adventures, the encounter tables and the weather tables are all very nice. But of the three regional books I liked Shining South the best simply because it is one of the few corners of the Realms that most people don't know much about. | |

| My favorite supplement is easily the Lords of Darkness.
There are great adventure ideas in each section, including maps and key NPC's. But most importantly, there are excellent - and detailed - descriptions of the evil factions and leaders. Let's face it, you don't need background on PC's, you need a fully developed foe and evil environ to battle.

The old book, even if less pages had more details and history then the new book which I think is more useful to both DM and player in comparisson to chapters on PrCs, magic spells and a monsters sections.
Way I see it they both work beautifully together, I'm a fan of the Rift and Gold Dwarves, so both give me info on them and on top of it, the 'New' version gives me some fun PrC's to choose from. The one scary thing is taking a Dwarf and taking classes in D.Defender and Deep Defenfer! [:0] To me I love it, to the monster's it's scary. [)] | |

Too true there Monsoon, really sad thing is I got rid of most of my 2E stuff when I went in to the Marines (would of left it at home stored away but knowing my father he would have pitched it). Looking back at all the areas of the FR they did softback supplements for I'm sure they'll cough up more of them rehashed/refurbished for 3.5 in the future. | |
