I was curious if anyone could recount some experiences of running a spellthief as a PC. How did it work? Did it feel out of place?

i've got a spellthief NPC in my camapign. so far, no chances have come up for him to use his special abilities. he's useful as a regular rogue in most respects though. i would,nt say the character feels out of place. the PCs just treat him like any other rogue. they ask him to search for traps, and keep a sharp eye on him to make sure he's not stealing stuff.

Spellthif plays like a vanilla rogue at the low levels. Once you get high enough to steal more than just spells (sr, elemental resistances), the class starts to really shine. Also depends on the campaign. If the BBEGs tend to be clerics or wizards, great. If your party has been hired to curtail the rampaging barbarian hordes, not so much.

I liked all the classes in Complete Adventurer...and the Spellthief is an interesting alternative to a standard rogue. My pal had a great time playing his spellthief. He was a great addition to our group.

Would have to chime in saying it depends on the flavor/theme of your campaign. As the above example, if your party regularily comes at odds vs. clerics/wizards/sorcerers etc. its not bad and does have a chance to shine once you get past the mediocre first couple levels. If you're in a dungeon crawl or lots of melee it tends not to perform so well (at least given the samples of what I've DM'd).

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

I'm currently playing a Bard/Spellthief. Its been ok so far. You usually dont have a good occasion to steal spells, but the sneak attack itself comes in handy.
Plus if you ever need to serve as a diversion (As I unfortunately once did...), you can take your wizards shield or mage armour spell and cast it on yourself up to 1 hour later when you need it. Very handy to suddenly shoot up to 20 or 21 AC.
But otherwise they really are like a Bard without music or most spells. Same HP, same skill points, even the same saves and base attack bonus. (But fun to play!)
