| Well I'm on the BETA enjoying the game but I have a question about the setting based on character design. In Eberron is it common or at least 'not unusual' to see dwarves without beards? This is something in just about every fantasy setting that is stereo´typical about dwarves.
But on D&D Online you have plenty of options for dwarves with only moustaches or even (gasp) bare faced! Just want wanna know if this is an MMO thing only, though I don't recall ever seeing this option in WoW, DAoC or EQ. | | "I was sittin' here eatin' my muffin, drinkin' my coffee, replayin' the incident in my head, when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity." - Jules Winnfield Sales/Trades Bad (1): Ironfist Boulderbender Trades/Sales completed (8.): Danthl, Dafrca, Garyaxe, qillan_dvra, realmaster, Vandal_Savage, cavedweller, unearthed arcana. | | Nothing ever prevented it before. Well, nothing but stereotypes and the general public image of dwarves. I would not say it's just Eberron-specific. | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis SOFTWARE: PC | PC (free) | MAC

| Lot of odd differences in Eberron but beardless dwarfs aren't one of them. No reason they couldn't be clean shaven I suppose but its not Eberron Campaign thing.
I beleive every picture of dwarfs in the various Eberron campaign books show them with beards, a couple are bald but they still have a beards.[:)]

True but in a number of settings a dwarf's beard is his pride (length of beard being a prime source of this pride), a beardless dwarf is something normally looked down upon so much so, that it's even considered an insult to be called beardless. So when the option is available it just makes you wonder. | | There's a picture of a beard-less (but mustache wearing) dwarf on page 43ish of the Eberron book. I don't think it's anything the setting emphasizes, but I think the emphasis on making characters look slightly different brings it out. | | Champion of the Rakshasa. I would say that Dragonlance in particular pushed the idea that a dwarf's pride is somehow linked to his beard. One mountain dwarf shaves his beard off before a battle against their kin (hill dwarves) to show his disdain for the slaying of their kin, etc.
My RPG buddies and I have never pushed the idea that dwarves must have beards.

| It varies from artist to artist, but there seems to have been a conscious decision to move away from the 'every male dwarf has a beard down to his knees' look in Eberron.
Steve Prescott (one of the main Eberron artists, especially with regards to warforged - he's also done many concept sketches for DDM) seems to primarily give male dwarves beards without mustaches. Tomas Giorello drew the King's Citadel member in Sharn: City of Towers as a male dwarf with a close-cropped goatee. AFAIK, there isn't any information about dwarf attitudes regarding facial hair in Eberron.
One of the many reasons I love the setting is that they've put a fresh spin on most of the PC races, breaking down many hoary old stereotypes - for instance, elves are no longer capriciously dancing in circles in the forest and automatically better than humans at everything - now they're primarily death-obsessed necromancers, fearsome cavalry/guerilla warriors, or shadowy spies and assassins disguised as entertainers. Also, Half-Elves are finally cool! But the dwarf seems to be the most-neglected PC race so far.
I haven't read the Player's Guide to Eberron yet, so I don't know how much information it included about them, if any. | | Cassael's Lament - An Eberron Story Vindicated Champion of Quori Champion of the Bone Knight

| Thanks for the feedback all. Does seem that Eberron is breaking away from the stereo-typical dwarf.
FR may have shortbearded dwarves (heck I've RP'ed a few myself) but completely beardless or moustachely dwarves are something I haven't seen yet.
