One of my friends who DM's alternate with me has picked up Red Hand of Doom and is planning on running it in the next few months. We're starting new characters at 6th level and I was thinking about creating a Spellthief Alchemist/Poisoner type character (I want to use the Warmachine Rogue Alchemist mini because it looks so cool), but the only 'book rules' for alchemical items I can find are those in the PHB and the alchemical capsules in Complete Adventurer. Was it 3.0 that they had Potions of Firebreath and the exploding potions? (I played NWN a lot). I haven't discussed the character concept with the DM yet, but he's a pretty 'by the book' kinda guy, so I'm gonna need rules to back up what I want to do. Anyone have ideas where to look for this stuff?

Anybody have any ideas on this, or are there just not any more rules for it?

I've got a Green Ronin book about Witches that has a really good section on alchemy/poison. Book of Vile Darkness I'm sure has some info as well. I'll see if I can get something to you tonight after work.

Blue Devil Games has a book called Poisoncraft, found a review link, http://www.3rdedition.org/reviews/viewer.asp?id=87

I've a bookmark for Realm of Evil that sports a section for poisons and toxins, http://www.realmsofevil.net/poison/

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

That Blue Devil book seems like just what I'm looking for. I checked Green Ronin's site and it looks like The Witches Handbook is what you're talking about, at least that's all I found about witches specifically. I'd be interested to know how much Alchemy is in that book. Thanks for the info!

There's a Master Alchemist prestige class in Magic of Faerun (it is 3.0 not 3.5). The main benefit is being able to brew potions of higher level than third.
As for poisons, every character can use them and some can do it without taking the risk of self poisoning (it's called Poison Use). You can check out the Assassin and Black Guard prestige classes. There was also a Poisoner prestige class in Dragon Magazine 312 (it's rogue in feel but evil and poisonous).
Finally, there are some "good poisons" in the Book of Exalted Deeds (a counter book for the Book of Vile Darkness that was already mentioned).

Champion of Cockatrices.

Well scouring both the Witch's Handbook and BoVD they didn't offer any twists on Feats (except Poison Immunity feat - BoVD) but both give some rather indepth breakouts for skills;

Heal (treat ailment, indentify disease, indentify poison)
Know Nature (pretty basic for knowing what you're handling)
Profession Herbalist (finding/preparing/using herbs)
Craft Poisonmaking (refining raw materials - venoms/saliva/mundane herbs for application)

The Witch's HB has a chart all about herbal remedies, plant toxins and spell components. The BoVD has a half page of different poisons and a smaller one detailing psychic poisons.

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

2E had potions of firebreath. NWN is a 3E adaptation, but has some added stuff that doesn't appear in normal DnD. The Isaac's Missile Storm spell, for example.

3E potions are restricted by range. Spells like Fireball can't be made into potions.

Alchemy and poisons are different than potions, though. For a more powerful version of Alchemist's Fire, check out the Forgotten Realms book Lords of Darkness under the section on the Wizards of Shade. There is an advanced form of Alchemist's Fire in there.

If your DM isn't willing to work with you I think you're better off looking for a different character. The existing alchemical items aren't all that powerful. I sure wouldn't want my best offensive maneuver at level 6 or 7 to be throwing a flask of alchemist's fire.

It's deja vu all over again.
