| Anybody here familiar with Cyberpunk 2020? I believe so... There's one excellent thing I'd like to incorporate into another games - that's threat situations.
When a threatening situation is evolving between two characters, they roll Cool+reputation+D10. Loser starts to feel uncomfortable and unsure, and if a combat occurs, loser has penalty to his combat rolls until his first remarkable success in combat. As the damage is more severe than just loss of hitpoints and there's no magical healing, participants are often happy if they can resolve situation this way. Loser is likely to withdraw, even if just to his crossbow over the next hill.
In theory this would be pretty easy to incorporate, the problematic thing would be to use it between groups of characters. One way would be to designate a leader for a group, to whom others would rely on. There might be a special feat/advantage which negates penalty coming from this.
What if players don't want to have a leader among them? Maybe it should be encouraged, make it a weakness. Initiative -penalties, bigger chance of characters being in random order during surprise encounters, and penalty to threat -rolls. Maybe even penalty to spot enemies?
Any ideas? | | Vindicated AtG Called shot: 2nd Huge Red Dragon My collected trade reference links Star Wars tactical combat -project My modelling/terrain pages Suomen miniatyyrikeräilijät / Miniature collectors of Finland

| You can use D&D rules to do this, without having to add anything, really. Make it an opposed Intimidation check between affected parties.
As with bashing down doors, just use the most intimidating character on each side to make the roll, and everyone else helps with the aid another rules (the equivalent of everyone standing around looking tough behind the meanest thug in the group). That way, your PCs don't have to declare a leader. The most threatening looking person is the one who makes the roll.
Loser gets a standard -2 penalty to whatever you want to penalize. Initiative, attack, Wisdom checks.
The tricky part is how to define "remarkable success in combat." I mean, I could come up with a list of things that could qualify, but I'd want to keep it simple on/off, not a list of conditions. Maybe something like first crit (very hard to pull off) or first killed enemy (maybe no fun if there's only one opponent)? I don't really like either of those ideas. | | Jeff Quick, Philadelphia 22 Successful Trades: benimoto, bonepinhamer, bradu, Changeling, dnd3eplayer, drowdude, Drift, Gausse, Ghendar, Ihawk, ikill4adollar, Khaibit_ema_Neteru, Lance H, marjorie, MeepoTheMighty, mulkhoran, Puggins, Ryngard, vrecknidj, wuzzard, xbrendanx, Zenako (x2) Pending Trades:

| If you'd like you can even extend Jefftyjeffjeff ideas. You can use Sense Motive to let the characters evaluate the strength of others (and Bluff to appear stronger or weaker). If we're talking about knights for example trying to impress each other Diplomacy check can be used as well. One more thing I'd put the modifier you use on the threatened characters as moral negative bonus and fear effect. This way one can try and change it with suitable magic and let fear resistant aid you in such situation. | | Champion of Cockatrices. I wish I never wished a wand of wishing. (Wishful thinking.) | You've probably already considered this, but using the parties average or even mode level could substitute nicely for Reputation (presuming that you're not using another mechanic).
That way it's not just a matter of where skill points have been dropped, but something a little less concrete and more a matter of "There's just something about those guys, you can tell they mean business". | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?
