If I ever were to decide to try to run a meat-grinder dungeon crawl like Undermountain, I'd hold out for alot more room descriptions, the 22 rooms so far, are far from enough. On top of it I believe we use to get one-a-week, but it looks like it's slowed down recently. Meaning I be even less likely to run it in the forseeable future. | | "I was sittin' here eatin' my muffin, drinkin' my coffee, replayin' the incident in my head, when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity." - Jules Winnfield Sales/Trades Bad (1): Ironfist Boulderbender Trades/Sales completed (8.): Danthl, Dafrca, Garyaxe, qillan_dvra, realmaster, Vandal_Savage, cavedweller, unearthed arcana. | | I've been running the upper level just off the box set with some stuff from the site. Conversion isn't abig deal with lvl.1. If you want to go further down though that is alot of homework. And frankly I'm bad at conversions so far. So I'd say it's fun for a short go but not as a major campaign setting. | | Two trades completed!! | I am running an Undermountain campaign, but I haven't been using the stuff that WotC is posting. I have gotten some ideas from it, especially the traps and stuff.
Basically, I designed my own plot, and the stuff they have posted doesn't really fit in with it that well. It doesn't really work with the big events that are going on in my Undermountain. The rooms have such random pairings of monsters, it just seems strange to me. I am also slightly modifying the maps to make it easier to describe to the players.
I have gotten more material out of the old Undermountain stuff than from the recent Return to Undermountain stuff. Not much that would take converting, just cool details about Undermountain itself. | | Champion of the Revenant Knight of the Elf Duskblade Complete Trades: Oni, Kidkach, Melrune, callidusx3

| I feel that way too with the monsters with what WOTC is doing. Yes I know it was created by the mad wizard himself but the random is abit too much. Its not like the monsters lair in one room and never move too interact.

Exactly! It's like nothing happens in a dungeon that the PCs don't directly start. Monsters just wait patiently in the room, never eating or persuing their own interests, until adventurers come to kill them.
It's probably worth the extra time it takes to design your own encounters and make it more interesting for the players. | | Champion of the Revenant Knight of the Elf Duskblade Complete Trades: Oni, Kidkach, Melrune, callidusx3

| I've been running undermountain lately. And well for the TPK down the shadowy hole in the first bit of rooms?
Room 5 with the small pit where the severed hand lies on top of the sack full of like 86 EP. I put a trap there. Stick something in there, a blade chops it off. I have a cleric currently missing 1 hand.

I'm gonna have to go over my copy of the boxed set but wasn't that the point? Halaster stocking the dungeon with all sorts of different creature types?
I do agree that some modification must be done to have the various denizens interact with each other. A little dungeon politics if you will. [:D] | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

| Ghendar, the weather is pretty crappy here so maybe I will dig out my boxset also and see if it will give me some ideas. I like too be about 2 stories ahead of the party that way incase they through a curve ball at me. Yes, but keep in mind that Halaster did this hundreds of years prior to Waterdeep becoming the metropolis that it is. A lot can happen in that amount of time.
Certain monsters are going to team up and kill off the ones that try to kill them every time they pass by. Other monsters are going to not be able to find a mate and their species will die off.
If there's only 5 Ogres in undermountain, in 5 different rooms scattered around the map, and several hostile creatures in between these rooms, there won't be any more ogres in undermountain in a few years. The Ogres would either form a clan (possibly ally with Orcs or something) and protect their own area of Undermountain, or they would die off.
Elementals and certain other outsiders, Dragons and maybe some abberations and undead would be about the only really randomly scattered creatures I could imagine, and those only where their presense makes sense. (Elementals as guardians of important rooms where the other monsters dare not go, for instance)
