| What, as a player do you abhor running into in a game? The monsters that cause you to throw your pencil at the table, put your head in your hands, or say "#$%#$% man, why us?"
My 'top' 5...
1. Nightwalkers (or any of his family) 2. Wraiths and other incorporeal undead (especially ones with spring attack) 3. Black Puddings (or other 'split if you hit them' food sources) 4. Remorhaz, and other things that hurt you when you hit them. 5. Golems | | Champion of the Flumph!!! | |

Nymph-induced heart attack?
Medusa, baby!
Polymorph him into a salmon out of water? Then it's salmon steaks for everybody forever!
Subdue him, pour melted lead into him, and then throw him into the ocean?
Sphere of Annihilation?
Subdue him, shrink him, and just before the spell expires, throw him down the throat of a red/black/green dragon? One problem can solve another...
Just a few ideas...

| I suppose this depends quite a bit upon the campaign . . . .
1) Orcs that are really monstrous humanoids (in a Warcraft campaign I'm in) 2) Warlocks (in that same Warcraft campaign) 3) Titans (in an alternate-history campaign) 4) Dragons (in that same alternate-history campaign) 5) Dragons (in that Warcraft campaign)
From my playing, 4) and 5) are really different because I hate meeting them for very different reasons.

| Let's see here: Hydras. "The Hydra moves 20 feet and stops." "I Charge" "As you approach the hydra, at 10 feet away, it attacks you with all 7 heads, from it's readied attack" "I complete my charage" "Lovely. It gets an attack of opportunity. Standard attack for a hydra is... all it's heads" 113 Hp to about 5 in one move. I got my attack in, didn't quite kill it, and then it managed to hit me again on it's next turn. Needless to say, I needed a raise dead after that experience.
Rust monsters, when your weapon is about 60% of the value of your eq, from investing in improving it. I kept my weapon, but it was when my character was being run by someone else, so I only found out afterwards.
Any undead that can drain levels. I don't care how easy the save is, I'd rather not have to make the save at all.
Confused/possessed Party members. You really don't want to kill them, but they have no such issues about killing you. Makes for a problematic encounter, especially when said confused party memeber is you, and you have the ability to kill just about anyone else in the party with one good hit. (Goliath Barbarian, 22 Base Str, Rage, Leap Attack with a Large Keen Greataxe.) The DM in this situation said we have 2 choices, when we're told to attack nearest creature, etc. We can either play our characters, correctly, and if we happen to kill a party member get XP for killing them solo for our trouble, or we can hand over the character sheets, and he'll take care of it for us, while we play solitare on the laptop. Needless to say, since the end result is approximately the same, we went with the XP to try to mitigate things if it goes poorly.
That's about it, but we're only finishing up the Crater Mines in RttToEE, and getting ready to head inward, so I'm sure I'll come up with more things that I'm not liking.

1. Spellgaunt Because the Rust Monster wasn't bad enough?! Now there's something with this AC and speed, that can yoink my stuff off of my belt with a racial bonus to the disarm/sunder check, has ludicrous bonuses to jump, AND its bite delivers Disjunction?! If I ever find who designed this horror...
The Spellgaunt, Dread Wraith, and Rust Monster are also among my list that my players hate the most.
A group of spellgaunts, in particular, was a very nasty first encounter for them. Almost all the players lost 1-2 magical items (mostly armor, shields, and weapons) during the first two rounds of combat. The initial shock written on their faces was priceless. They never thought spiders like these existed. Now, even at high levels, every spider-like creature they encounter commands their attention and respect, at least until they know it's not a spellgaunt. [:p]
I also agree with IanB's mention of the Hezrou, a relatively medium CR creature that has access to Blasphemy and has a chance to summon another Hezrou. My players forgot/were unaware of the Hezrou's Blasphemy ability and almost got wiped out. Everyone within range was stunned and/or paralyzed. Only the wizard was out of range from the spell effect and managed to summon a Hound Archon (which he commanded to teleport each and everyone to safety). They came back prepared (with Silence and Solid Fog to trap/hinder the Hezrou) and finally defeated the demon but the initial encounter still bothers them to this day.
Mind Flayers, of course, are also included on my list. They are always deadly when a party is unprepared to face them. One particularly nasty encounter that also almost wiped them out was an encounter with two Mind Flayers and their Clay Golem bodyguard. The Mind Flayers played keep away (planeshifting at times) and kept mindblasting the players (particularly the warrior-types) that were engaging the Clay Golem. Stunned and unable to heal themselves (due to the cursed wounds ability of the golem), they had no choice but to retreat, leaving one of their unconscious party members at the mercy of the mindflayers.

| Ahh yes, the kobolds incedent.
There were 60 of them... all kobolds had seperate character sheets... All of them had different classes... from non WoTC expansions... some of them straight from 3.0, right after he PHB was launched. in a home-brewed chaos-magic zone.
The battle lasted sixteen rounds, and took four hours. At the end of it, we were so badly depleted that if we had run into a cow we would have lost.
Incedentally, the arcane monk is Super nasty. the ability to Quicken Spell for free at first level is horribly broken, and stacking physical combat damage to the magic damage makes it even worse | | "Observation changes the observed. For those concerned about Blasphemy, I feel your pain. This spell is so crazy good that none of the other Words of Faith can compare. Not only do you not have to hear the Blasphemy to be affected by it (unlike Holy Word), but its lowest tier effect is about 10,000,000,000,000,000 times better than the other 3 words: dazing. At those levels, action deprivation IS death. Wy response was simple: all 4 words are normalised to function as Holy Word. It means that there are some actual defences against it now, and it isn't insta-death at every tier. | | Support awesome games: Play Hecatomb!
