I don't really like Adventure Quest. My little brother plays it, and it just seems monotonous. I loved Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and all those japanese games, but Adventure Quest (which is comparable a Japanese-style RPG) is just lacking whatever substance made those games great. The combat system just seems to be missing something.

Runescape is another very popular online RPG that a lot of people are obsessed with that I just can't get into.

I have never found a free online RPG that liked, actually. Why? There's no actual roleplaying in them, and the action is...well...not very actiony.

Tactics Arena Online is a good turn based strategy/fantasy game, and thats about the best free online game I have ever seen. The animation quality is relatively good, and the combat system isn't half bad. You have to pay for a gold membership which unlocks the most powerful creatures, but you can play without a membership.
