I am asking this to find out a better idea from Role Players about how long they would want to spend driving to a game. The reason is that the wife and I are looking at moving to a place where we can actually buy some land with woods to go along with the house. BUt this means that most of the gamers in my groups would have to drive. We are looking at land that is about the same drive time from where we are now but I want to know a better idea of what more people would tolerate.

Thanks for any input....just vote with a letter. And, if you want to explain your rationale please do...[:D]

How far would you want to drive for a game?
A.) 05-15 minutes
B.) 16-30 minutes
C.) 31-45 minutes
D.) 46-60 minutes

As I don't drive I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer, but I will anyways.[:D] I'd be willing to go D, but there are some conditions. It'd have to be either the only game around or a close friends game.

My players don't want to drive 15 minutes to another persons house, even though he's willing to host the game. Another game changed venues after the FLGS, where it was played moved about 15-20 minutes away.

One thing to note is that RIers think that if it's more than 15 minutes away, you need to pack a lunch. We're a pretty short sighted lot when it comes to distances people in other states are used to driving. It's difficult to drive for an hour and still be in the state.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

LOL!! Out here on the praire you can drive for 15 minutes and be in the same state. I have a friend at work (here in Kansas City) that lives 45 minutes away from the city. She is out in the sticks, the "town" she lives in has roughly 500-750 people and lives even further out in the country.

Probably B.

Then again, in my small city, I can be anywhere in about 15 minutes. (A couple of years ago it was 10 minutes, but we're growing pretty fast.)

Thirty minutes would get me to any of the outlying communities as well, or more importantly, from the small communities to where my game currently is. Which I may have to consider in the near future as my wife starts looking for work again.

It's a tough call, I mean it would have to be an awesome campaign to make me go D.

If it was pretty much the only game I was able to be involved in I'd say I would be a C. Under normal conditions put me down as a B.

C.

My friends and I are spread across the suburbs of Seattle, and getting any group together usually involves someone travelling 20 minutes. But any distance comparable to my old commute downtown is still reasonable for me (and that commute was 30-45 minutes).

It would also depend heavily on the time of day and what sort of diving it was, urban vs. rural etc.

I would guess that B would be the best answer for our group. My house is kinda centrally located. It can take the guys coming out of the city about 1/2 hour to get here and others from north and west of me can also spend about 1/2 as well (more often about 15 min). We have had the gaming sessions at the Northern friends house a few times, but the guys from the city had a drive that was close to an Hour, and the reverse was also true the few times we gamed in Boston. The other factor is what the site looks like and has available for room. That made the games in Boston less appealing since they had an apartment and a smallish gaming table. It is one thing to drive 45 minutes and have a good gaming time, it is another to drive and end up sitting two deep and balancing books on your lap. It also helps that 99% of the gaming is now on weekends, usually Sunday Afternoon and we are in for about 8+ hours of playing at a time. 1pm until 9pm or later. If you are doing a worknite session, that can only last a shorter time to start, then having to pile on a lot of drive time both ways would be an issue I am sure.

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

Definitely B

I too am moving out of the city to the south of Asheville NC, about 35 minutes. I found a cool A frame house down there on the side of the mountain with plenty of game room space.

I will still keep my place (townhouse) downtown which has a gameroom, so on the weekends I'll be commuting 35 minutes to get to my own game! Doh! But I'll also be spending the weekend in town. I have a few gamers in my five year lifespan D&D gaming group who each drive from 15 to 30 minutes to get to the game.

We'll see if this dual house living actually works!

I'd rephrase the question ... I'm pretty sure people would rather not drive at all, but are willing to drive up to a certain distance for a game ...

In the games I run, I have multiple players that drive roughly an hour to get to the game.

I also drive roughly 40 minutes to get to some of my other games ... but I'd drive farther if necessary.

I'll say my answer is E (drive more than an hour) for what I'm willing to do, and my answer is 0 (don't drive at all) for what I'd want to do ...

I would have to go with C. It is already what we are doing for one game, and what most of the rest of the group is doing for the other game (hosted at our house.) We recently bought a new house with 5 acres of wooded property, but on the far north-west of town. The closest player is about 10 minutes away. The furthest is in the far sticks to the south-east and while his in on interstate pretty much the whole way, it is still a 45 minute drive for him. (Although we only live 8 minutes from where he works.)

A couple of our friends do a once a month or so game that is 3 hours away.

I'd go with B myself. Most of my friends who game tend to be just along the western fringe of Boston like myself. If it's a game downtown it's Generaly at the Compleat Stratagist which is a five minute walk from my work.

B) I'd personally spend around 30 minutes or so commuting to a game as long as the players were committed and the gaming was intense (and I didn't have to DM). 30 minutes with decent traffic can take you a pretty long way out here.

I haven't found games with players who were really committed for several years so lately my actual time spent commuting to a game is 5 minutes tops (walking at that). My place is the usual spot for my current gaming group to get together and that entails 0 commute time [:D]

Depends on how desperate they are for thier game fix I guess. If they are already playing other realms and what not, they might be less willing.
Car Pooling works well, as helps keep the numbers up.

I like to travel no distance, and often dont as I`m DM.

I travel about 20 minutes for a game once every three weeks. All the other games tend to happen at my place except for a few.

The record for someone regularily travelling to my games is two hours on public transport ! (Sunday public transport is very very poor in my city). He does this there & back. Just plain starved for RPG.

C.

That's about how far I'm willing to drive for a day of fishing (with occasional drives of D. or more sometimes) so that's about how far I'd drive for a day of gaming.

One caveat is that if your sessions go long into the evening, the 30-45 minute drive to your house isn't the hard part, but the drive home could be awful. If you only played for 3 or 4 hours around midday then its not so bad.

Can you drive to meet your players (and lug along the appropriate books/dice/minis/etc.)? Perhaps at one of their houses or a nearby FLGS?

When I lived in Cambridge I was up at Games People Play and Pandemonium Books a lot (70's and 80's) and would take long walks over to Complete Stratagist on occasion and up to Excalibur Hobbies in Arlington on Mass Ave. Excalibur is defunct (sort of) and is now located in Malden and goes by the name Hobby Bunker. They have the largest collection of metal minis and toy soldiers around, and decent RPG section, although I still would give the nod to Complete on that point. I also tend to do some shopping at Myriad Games in Salem NH (which is only about 20 minutes away up I-93 from where I live.) Frankly, I spend more on EBAY than at Brick and Mortar Stores combined, but I still drop a few hundred a year at Hobby Bunker and probably double that at Myriad.

Other than the games that happen at my place, I drive at least 40 minutes to get to where I'm playing, up to about 60-70 min to get to jgsugden's game.

There's another guy who drives down from Sacramento for that as well.

I think Californians may be more inured to long driving times in general, though.

Up to D or E (more than an hour) for the right group.

It depends on how often you meet, and how long your sessions are. Our group meets once a month, and we play from 10:30am to 9-10:00pm.

So, if you guys who are saying "15 minutes" are meeting weekly for 3-4 hours, your ratio of driving time / play time is roughly the same as two of our players who drive an hour to get to our game.

But currently I host our game, so my drive time is zero. [:D]

I drive 45 minutes (each way) for two games in which I'm a player, and I have five players who drive 45 minutes each way for the game I DM.

As long as a session goes at least five or six hours, I'd spend up to an hour (each way) on the commute.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

As to the game time aspect. While I am at school the game sessions are every other Sat from 1000 to 1600/1700. But right now everyone in the group lives at the most 30 minutes from the house. Last game session I broke the news to them about Mrs. griffrat and I looking at moving. There was a little grumbling because we "live on the edge" of town. Which is not even close to the truth.

One of the guy's parents live in my home town. To put things in perepctive for you my high school graduatating class was under 70 people and the city limits of my home town are exactly "one square mile". Think Mayberry....[:D]

Since this guys parents moved out to my home town my friend has had to make the drive there and back (drive time one way would be roughly 45 minutes) several times. Now this is really what got me thinking about drive times.

Since here in the K.C. metro things are super spread out. To get just about anywhere you drive as there is no really good bus system since the city is divided into two states. So as it stands with the game group car pooling is a good idea and a couple of the guys regulary alternate driving.

With the idea of a move the game site would be in its own dedicated building. With around five acres, in this area, outbuliding or "workshops" are a common thing so there would be a pretty nice place to have a game. The game session if and when we moved would be from about 1000-2230/2300 as I would want the guys to be home "early" enough to enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Again, thanks for all the candid responses....please keep them coming!!!

I currently drive about 20-30 minutes. I'd drive up to an hour though because the game I'm in now is simply that much fun and has a great set of players.

I blame Kiddoc though, 'cause his house is so far away ...

Note: I'm the 3rd or 4th closest. Okay_Mckay is pretty close, as is another player who's not here. We have two players (Lucky_KSU and his cousin) who probably drive an hour or more from Durham and Terin drives about an hour from Chapel Hill, plus one more is likely at 45 minutes on the North side of Raleigh.

And, of course, the one player who drives down for Virginia to our 2/month game. He hangs out all weekend and is single, but that's a heck of a drive.

When I was in college I played in an every few weeks game in Charlotte - that's 120 miles from Raleigh for those playing at home with an atlas. I was young then though ...

Spent 3 years at B, about 20 minutes drive and at the same time one of the players drove about an hour to get to the same game every week.

For him it was the only game in town literally.

Well, I've certainly driven about a half hour to get to a game. In a sprawled out city like Omaha, that gets you most of the way across town (without using the interstate). Some of the drives back home were a bit dicey after 6+ hours of gaming, but everything always worked out.

I'd probably be willing to drive between 45 min. to an hour if it was a game that I already knew, a group that I liked, and I fit in well with them. But I wouldn't do that for just anyone.

I think that B is what I would say.

Right now, I am not going that far:
I DM a group in my house and I play in a group about 10-15 minutes away. I really like having shorter trips like that. When I drive, I bring all my miniatures (about 2000), my main books, my laptop, my dice (which several people either use or have used), and some other stuff. I prefer playing in my house since there is a really large gaming table made for D&D (4' x 8') and all my stuff is already there.

I started out walking to my game about a mile and a half. Now, I'll drive as far as necessary to play. My DDM tourney's are 115 miles away, and the casual game is 55 miles away. I still drive 3 hours 3/year for my old high school gaming get together. (10-20 players, rotating games)I'm not sure this will help your info, but put me down for D. On a side note, i thibk the length of the game may be a factor. I'm more likely to drive farther if the game lasts longer.

I drive about 45 minutes to our games now. It used to just be 5-10, but I moved to the sticks. Everybody else lives in town and probably wouldn't drive as far as I do, but I would drive a bit farther if I had to. It's not like I can DM for my closest neighbors, they're bovine and would be lacking social skills.
So right now I'm C, but would go D for the right game.

It's not like I can DM for my closest neighbors, they're bovine and would be lacking social skills.
So right now I'm C, but would go D for the right game.

Your closest neighbors probably have as much social skill as some gamers I know. [:0]

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

D

I already drive 46.6 miles to go play but since I leave at 5:30 pm then I hit traffic, takes about 48 minutes, coming back, which is about 11:15pm I have zero traffic and I get home in 35 minutes [:p]

My group decided to play at the central point from where everyone lives so it is fair for everyone except the host of course, he is lucky to just stay home but he needs to clean up afterwards [:D]

How far would I want to drive? No time at all. Luckily we play at my house so this is currently the case.

How long would I be willing to drive? An hour or more, easily. Getting together with friends and having a good time is more than worth the effort. Hell, it already takes me from 45 minutes to an hour to get to work every day and that isn't fun at all. What kind of dick would I be if I wouldn;t put at least that much time in for friends?

LOL! I have a few friends from RI (living on the boarder of it and all) and that "RI mentalllity" really bugs me. I have to drive more than a few minutes for anything so it is no big deal, but it's like pulling teeth to get them to want to.
