I expect one of my players will soon be divining the nature of an upcoming large encounter.

They will soon be entering the mushroom cavern inhabited by Vereorax, the beholder. His minions include a tribe of derro, and some opportunistic earth elementals and a roper. (Hellspike Fantastic Location).

Without giving too much away, what would be a good reply to a divination (to Heironeous)?

Thanks in advance.

How 'bout this?

In the forest of the Underworld [Mushrooms], the Earth itself rises against you [Elementals], and its maddened children [Derro] will give you no peace. In the grasp of deception your resolve is weakened [Roper]. The eyes of evil are upon you, and their gaze is death to the unwary [Guess who?]. Shield yourself from the arcane glare [Take protection from magic], and you will win through to your prize.

I dunno, maybe it gives away too much, but lotsa creatures have gaze attacks.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Kyrin! That will work. I was however hoping for a little more input from others. Perhaps another time.

It might give too much away, but players are notoriously dense when it comes to interpretting clues IMO (even obvious ones) as and DM who has ever tried to run a mystery game knows.

You defintely hit the right note, though. Gods seem notorious for speaking in obscure riddles and hints no matter what you ask them. Just once I want a God to pipe up with "Go 30' down the corridor and take a left. Watch out for the spiked pits and acid trap. Oh, and make sure to get the key from the orc smoking a rollup behind the pillar."

Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. Nemesis of Gnomes and Dinosaurs.

Hmm let me give it a go...

Amidst the stalks of underwood [mushroom cavern] the mad children [Derro] consort within the arms and embrace of the earth [Earth elementals/Roper]. But woe the father's harsh glares [Beholder] for should you shun his children his wrath unto you he deliver and the prize you seek withheld.

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

That one's pretty good too.

As it happens, he didn't bother with the divination -- they just ran in instead. The derros were hardly a nuisance -- but the roper was just nasty. The party was barely surviving the roper when the monk went for an end run to come up on the roper from behind some cover. Unfortunately, he awakened/attracted two lg earth elementals on the way. They managed to overcome the roper but with 4 out of 6 members entangled, and the paladin down to 1 Str, it was close. However they were weakened enough that the monk fell to an earth elemental double slam ("the dirt hits you, and you hit the dirt"). With the paladin basically useless and the monk dead, they wisely made a strategic retreat. Luckily, the experience gained was enough to promote the cleric to 9th level and he promptly cast raise dead on the monk.

After healing/raising/restoring they then returned to the cavern to confront the beholder. Although the beholder was able to connect on a number of rays, not a single character failed their saves and they were able to take the beholder down without losing any further party members as their luck was sure to run out eventually.

However it was a fun and intense evening of carnage.

It doesn't give away too much for my players. [V] One very casual player, one newer player, and one semi-knowledgeable player. Even when I use the actual mini for a core Monster Manual encounter, they often don't know what they're facing until after the encounter, let alone what its abilities might be (choker, derro, etc).

Awesome. You are very lucky. I hate how hard it is to surprise my players. [:(]
