I'm not sure if anyone has already posted about this but if any of you like to use mood music for your games (like I do), you might want to check this website link.

It's a massive library of PC and video game soundtracks.

This one is the direct link to the soundtracks.

I stumbled upon it just last week when I was looking for some new music to use for our weekly game. Just wanted to share.

I finally got some mp3s of those other hard to find/obscure Jeremy Soule (of Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, NWN, and Morrowind fame) music.

I don't know if it's a pirated website though. But it kinda looks legal. I apologize in advance if it is.

Heh, you're welcome! [:D]

I know how you feel. I have been visiting this website everyday for the past week already everytime I don't have anything important to do (and when I'm not playing Oblivion or DDM, that is).

It's nice to hear the the music of those old games I played way back in the mid 90s like WarCraft II, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter 2, etc. Kinda brings back some fun memories. [:p]

Does anyone know if they have the midnight syndiacte D&D soundtrack on there? or the D&D movie soundtrack? (at least one good thing about the movie)

Those are CDs I use frequently, along with the eberron soundtrack.

Thanks for the nice resource but keeping and going deep in the topic, you think RPG mood music is necessary? that makes a RPG session more interesting and complete?

In my opinion music is one important resource to help gamers to deep into the story, maybe is not extremly necesary but keeps the enviroment of game. In my country we have many RPG competition were Disguise and Music are important elements to win. Some people say that just description is enough but i guess that more is always the better.

I like mood music, mostly instruemental to accompany games. Sound track selection from movies is good too.

I like to have a multimedia expereince when I play :)

While I don't think it's really necessary, mood music can really help a lot.

I've been using mood music since the early 90s, and I noticed it can really inspire some players to roleplay during combat. Playing the soundtrack of Last of the Mohicans for combat the first time was incredible. It made an otherwise boring combat with a tribe of orcs more fun to play.

I've since collected scores of soundtracks, and thankfully the birth of mp3s made my library more manageable and easier to use during rpg sessions.

For those who are new to game soundtracks and want to pick the best music from the linked website as mood music, you can't go wrong with the following:

From the terrific Jeremy Soule:
Baldur's Gate series
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance
Icewind Dale series
Neverwinter Nights
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Dungeon Siege series
Planescape: Torment
Total Annihilation

Other good choices:
Rurouni Kenshin Original Soundtracks (scores only)
Rainbow Six series
Rome: Total War

I'm not really a fan of anime music, but Rurouni Kenshin is an exception. It has excellent combat music and background roleplaying music. For those who watched and followed the series, then you''ll probably know how to use them. [:)]

There are many more good ones, but you should start with the ones given above.

Enjoy!

If you're looking for entire discs, I'd suggest the scores from Conan the Barbarian, Dune, Hellraiser, and just about anything done by Danny Elfman (the Tim Burton Batman movies, Night Breed, Planet of the Apes 󞪁]).

Good mood music can really take a game over the top, especially if the player is on "DM-Mind-Meld"...It's really just coincidence, but there are times when it is creepy. For instance, when a particular bad guy shows up, it's usually one particular song playing; combats that end poorly typically begin with another tune; etc. Things like that tend to creep out the players...sometimes to the point where the characters are jumping at shadows whenever certain songs start.

Yep, Danny Elfman is one of the finest. I believe he has the biggest number of scores in my movie/tv mood music collection. His music works best for gothic/tomb/crypt/cemetery/ravenloft-type adventures.

If you like Morrowind, then you probably should check out the soundtrack of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

It's still Jeremy Soule. And the opening title theme is as good (if not better) as Morrowind's.

Of course, that means you'll have to get a copy of Oblivion (which is a very good game).

I have three different Midnight Syndicate CD's and they are great for background music in almost any kind of game.

Here is the link on where to buy their CD's http://www.midnightsyndicate.com/main.htm

While the movie sucked IMHO, the soundtrack from Waterworld is fairly decent and has snippets that cover a lot of diffent moods/tones etc. Same thing for the movie Dune (although I like that movie).

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

I opt for Fantasy Rock for my Games, during climatic battles. Has lyrics like 'For the King, For the Land, For the Mountains, to the rivers that rage down below.'

I think the song "Land of Green" from Coalminer's Beat works wonders.

I must confess, I sometimes use techno/disco music as background for combat.

Not any kind of techno/disco, but just the ff:

- Juno Reactor from Matrix 2 (for bosses)
- Battle without Honor or Humanity from Kill Bill Vol.1
- Ready Steady Go from Collateral (for large, easy battles)

Don't ask me why or how, but these really work for us. Some players even prefer it over the traditional classic/rpg music. Weird, huh?

You still can't beat the Conan Soundtrack... expecially for serious battle scenes.

Anyone heard of Vangelis? He does mostly new-age music, but one particular soundtrack he did, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, has a very 'dungeons and dragons' feel to it, and some tracks play like the background music from Neverwinter Nights (e.g. going to battle, wandering around the town, entering a temple, etc.).

Thank you so much for that link Nix! I've been trying to find the World of Warcraft soundtrack for a while.

In my Eberron game, I've made a rather large playlist including Pirates of the Carribean, Neverwinter Nights, Fable, Conan, all the LotR soundtracks and much, much more. When game time rolls around, I slap my iPod in the little speaker dock I bought for my wife and let it play. It really works great.
