Gm and and i are coming up with a new concept for a old char.
was a 2nd level monk, died. the rest of the party is around 8-9th level. We feel its the right time to bring him back as a avatar of sorts for his god. My question is this under natural lycanthrope(tiger) the level adjust ment is sam eas base creature +3. so is that monk at lvl 2 +3=5 or tiger animal hd6 then the +3=9 +2 for being a monk lvl 11!. we are slightly confused as this seems to make lycanthropes quite a high level adjuster. can somebody please clarify

Human LA = 0, +3 makes it 3 ... so yes, your Lvl 2 +3 = 5

I think he's also asking if a weretiger gets the extra 6d8 hit dice a tiger gets.

No I don't believe so. He starts as human monk and gets the were template added so other than the con bonus HP I don't believe you get any extra HP's in were tigher form.

I played a weretiger in one adventure with a +3 to ECL and IMO it is overpowered. I stayed in hybrid form most of the time and just tore up the badguys with damage and pounce. This could have been my DM though he wanted me to play a were but was totally unprepared for me to stay in were form in most battles.

A lycanthrope adds the Hit Dice of its animal form to its base Hit Dice for race, level, and class. These additional Hit Dice modify the lycanthrope's base attack bonus and base saving throw bonuses accordingly.

ECL = Level Adjustment + Hit Dice

Thus, a weretiger (natural) lycanthrope would have an ECL of 9. You'd have to be 11th level to be a weretiger 2nd-level Monk.

An ECL of 3 for a weretiger PC would be ridiculously overpowered. An ECL of 9 is just about right. You effectively lose 3 Hit Dice and gain other special abilities (damage reduction, shapeshifting, etc).

See the Monster Manual entries under 'Lycanthropes as Characters' (p178) and Effective Character Level (ECL) (p308).

Hope that helps [:D]

While it's nice to have nifty power-abilities, an ECL of 3 for a weretiger would definitely skew things.

Personally I've found (after a few years of playtesting) that any ECL where you lose more than 1 Hit Dice in proportion (Half-celestial, lycanthropes) tend to suffer from the lower BAB, Hit points, etc. in the long run. I had a half-celestial fighter who looked stunningly good on paper but the low hit points and low BAB just didn't cut it past 10th level.

Of course I also don't usually number crunch mixed Prestige Classes to munchkin out the stat bonuses so I might be overly critical of PCs with ECL races [:D]

well this is more of a rp char than min maxer, he has been waiting to come back from the celestial realms since he died at level 2 they have been questing for certain items to build a statue for his god, now the statue is complete he will return and continue his work, this is new territory for both of us as we both pretty much vanilla gamers i hqave only played phb classes and races. But he also has the vow of poverty which should make things interesting. Is it just me or does the VoP seems to be tailer made for the monk class?

Dragon Magazine 313 has a good article in it about leveling up the various Lycanthropes. If you can get ahold of it, I thoroughly recommend it.

There's also a spot on the WotC pages that deals with the Savage Progressions.
