| I have a question I've been meaning to send into WotC, but since they lurk here [}:)] maybe I can get an official response too. HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION: A druid decides he wants his forest to be full of awakened animals. If he awakens a large group of bears (for example) and they mate and have offspring, will the offspring be awakened? I ask because the spell says that the creature's type becomes Magical Beast (augmented animal). I would venture to say that makes it an innate permanent change to the base creature that does in fact pass genetically. What says you? | | Completed trades: Gausse, Mazra, Pagansexy, Galerians, Lord_Raven, Drakkengi, Temujinn x2, Random Sasquatch, elf_ranger, Azuretide, Hung4treason, Griffrat (face2face), Nasamonkey Carpe Forum! | |

| | I'd say that it probably would pass on to the offspring. The only thing that I could think of that would make it otherwise is if because it's a spell, it only affects the creatures that it was cast on. It might not affect their genes that would be passed on. I don't see why this would be, though, so the offspring should also be awakened. | | For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three. | |

| Sounds distinctly like a "DM Discretion" situation.
I would think that the magic that changes the parent is not necessarily enough to change the offspring. Otherwise, a druid or two could completely wipe out existing animal populations and replace them with magical beasts.
It seems the main logistical reason for the type change is to prevent awakened familiars/animal companions. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Champion of Dwarven Thunderlashers Knight of the Large Dire Chicken Have/Want List Trade References | |

Have to agree. A forest devoid of animals would be a Bad Thing for nature, and that's not what druids are all about. So I'm with zenthrus on this. It shouldn't be passed on.

| | I'd argue that it should be passed on, if only because it makes for a cool idea for an adventure - crazy druid goes around awakening everything, sane druids ask the party to stop him, and you get a great ethical dilemma regarding what to do about the awakened animals that remain after you stop the crazy guy. Integrate them into society? Let them form their own communities? Etc., etc. | | Anson on WotC boards | |

| | I got this idea watching Narnia- if you've read the books, you know that Aslan basically Awakens a small population of animals and tells them not to interbreed with the dumb animals. That's why animals in Narnia speak. | | Completed trades: Gausse, Mazra, Pagansexy, Galerians, Lord_Raven, Drakkengi, Temujinn x2, Random Sasquatch, elf_ranger, Azuretide, Hung4treason, Griffrat (face2face), Nasamonkey Carpe Forum! | |

Talking animals taste the best [:O]
I think it would be a very interesting idea for an adventure. I don't know that I'd use it as a stock rule. Perhaps the crazy druid found a power source that allows his awakened animals to pass the traits on to their offspring (while other awakened animals would not). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a.
