Our RPG group (All L5) is working through the Age of Worms Campaign, near the end of the Ebon Triad module (Dungeon 125)
Our DM is adding a few things, so we confront the faceless one, about to sacrifice a virgin to his evil god or whatever. On either side of him are 2 wizards, and guarding the entrance is an Allip.
Our L5 cleric is first to act. He says "holy S#@t turn undead". The Allip ignores his feeble attempt. Their wizards soften us up with their spells. Then our cleric says, ummmm maybe I should have cast silence first?!
We all cracked up and rolled around laughing. He gets off his silence spell and we mow them down, but only just. Our wizard and rogue were hanging on by a thread. My paladin took 4 wisdom damage from the Allip. The cleric took 7 con damage, our monk, deftly avoiding the area effect spell (fireball) took 5 strength damage from a ray of enfeeblement.
Our cleric now knows his first priority when discovering a room full of evil wizards, and winning the initiative.

I have always been here.

You've got me chuckling to myself over this one. In our long-running campaign, we let our least experienced player take the role of lead spellcaster - the party wizard. In short, his answer to everything was "I cast lightning bolt."

If there's an enemy, cast lightning bolt.
If you can't get a door open, cast lightning bolt.
If the captured bad guy won't talk, cast lightning bolt.

Our DM had warned us beforehand (going into a major encounter) that "your enemies are sophisticated tacticians and they've been observing your combat habits, this won't be easy". So what does our wizard do? Use every 3rd level spell slot to memorize lightning bolt - he had a Pearl of Power too. When the fight started, he thought he saw a brilliant move that could line up about 10 of our enemies. After casting, nothing happened - they all had immune electricity buffs. What could have been a pretty easy fight in our favour ended up with the DM having to cheese out the situation in order to avoid a TPK.

Over 270 successful online DDM trades.

Ah well in the tradition of Bastard! He should have used a bigger lightning bolt. [:D]

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

I've been on the other side of this lightnig bolt thing. I was a 6th level wizard, lightning bolt is my prefered 3rd level mass damage spell, and the DM kept throwing hordes of low level rogues at us and I would lightning bolt them, thin them out, making the battles fairly easy.
Through out the adventure he kept throwing large numbers of low levels at us despite us using the same tactics over and over, lightning bolt fighter mop up.Despite the fact we were under almost constant surveilance by the thieves guild his answer wasn't to change tactics or exploit our weakness he would just throw more low levels with better and better equipment at us.

He wasn't much of a DM, good roleplayer as a player, but every few years he begs us to let him DM and after his adventures we always swear never again.

I hope you didn't let him listen to the Dead Alewives -- especially the part about the darkness.... [)]

This reminds me of a funny DM mistake. We had played The Sword of the Dales trilogy (back in 2e) and my Fighter had the Sword of the Dales, which reflects Lightning Bolt and Polymorph back at the caster, among a few other cool powers. A few months later, the party was exploring an old castle, and had wandered into the wizard's study, where he was waiting for us. As soon as we opened the door to his study, he was waiting for us-- with a Lightning Bolt spell. Luckily, my fighter was in the lead of the party, and before anyone knew what had happened, the Lightning Bolt had reflected off my sword and had killed the wizard that had cast it. The DM was soo mad he had forgotten about my sword and we got free XP.
