| from what i've seen on enworld and WOTC boards the only thing that intrests me is the alternate class features and, possibly, the dragon shaman.
I never liked the cavaler and his successor the Knight dosen't interest me, neither does the beguiler.
Over all i'm reserving judgement till it comes out and I have a chance to look it over but right now I'm leaning towards no thanks.

I think that I will be picking it up, but I want to see and handle a copy first before I commit. I do that with all of my gaming purchases of late, so no real comment on quality or not.

| Not sure if anyone read through the alternatives for the fighter, but this type of thing is exactly why I am looking forward to this book.
quote: COUNTERATTACK
Every offensive move creates an opening for a counterattack, and you know how to exploit this facet of combat to its fullest.
Level: 12th.
Replaces: If you select this class feature, you do not gain the fighter bonus feat at 12th level.
Benefit: At 12th level, you learn to hold back some of your offensive prowess to enable a potent counterattack. As a full-round action, make one melee attack at your highest base attack bonus. At any time before the start of your next turn, you can use an immediate action to make a melee attack (using your highest base attack bonus) against an enemy that attacks you in melee.

| PHBII is actually a fantastic addition to my collection. I love the class special ability substitutions (especially the Marshal!), and the additional descriptions and samples.
The feats are actually pretty well balanced, because many of them have very high-level or strict prerequisites.
My favorite section of the book, other than the "building your identity" fluff, is the Teamwork Benefits. This section deals entirely with party dynamics and has a lot of excellent suggestions for how to improve party functioning. Furthermore, the teamwork benefits are like entire "free" feats that a party can "research" and learn.
So if a party completes a mission where charging is important, they might learn a "teamwork benefit" that lets other team (re: party) members step aside when someone is charging (i.e., you can charge through teammates). There are a huge selection of these "cooperative" feats in there that are really creative, and actually quite helpful for facilitating good teamwork.

| | I'll buy it especially for the feat choices. I'm in the camp that you can never have too many options or choices, so I'm happy for something like this. | I just got my copy today and I must say I'm impressed. I like the variations to the existing classes quite a bit and the new classes are pretty well done, in my opinion.
The focus on how to create backgrounds for characters is a welcome addition for those who may have a hard time with that sort of thing. I also like the addition of starting equipment packages and suggested feat lists in the back of the book. They're not definative, but provide a new player with a good idea of what they can work towards that's not total cheese. I don't have time to do an in-depth review, sorry.

| Huh? Wha???? This HAS to be wrong.
So, can it penetrate a thin wooden wall to hit an enemy on the other side? How about a pane of glass? If it could theoretically penetrate the plate mail armor of several foes, how could it not go through thin walls and such.

| | If it works similar to the Exit Wound special quality from Complete Warrior, then each target after the first gets a cumulative +4 cover bonus to AC, and you only roll the attack roll once. So, if you rolled a total score of 26, you'd hit AC 26 on the first target, 22 on the second, 18 on the third, etc. Also, as soon as you fail to hit a target in the line, the effect ends. | | Champion of the Entire Monster Manual 1! Penetrating Shot Req: Str 15, Point Blank Shot, base attack bonus +10 Effect: Your ranged attack targets every foe in 60-ft. line
Is there a catch?
No catch. Use a standard action to take a shot in a 60-foot line. Roll an attack at each creature in the line. If you hit, you deal damage. Any bonus damage (sneak attack, flaming weapon) only affects the first target.
You're at least 10th level when you do this, so you might hit everyone behind your primary target for an extra 1d8+10, but give up your extra attacks to do so.
Compare to the 10th level sorcerer blasting lightning bolt (ALL DAY!) for 35 damage a pop, and it really isn't broken.
Better than many other Feat options in the game? Yes. No question. With hundreds, maybe thousands, of feats available, there are perhaps 75-90% or more that aren't considered as true options. All the feats in this book were deliberately designed to fall in the 10-25% that are.
Also, many of the higher-power feats were created specifically to provide compelling options at the mid-to-high levels of play. | | Professional Fan of DDM

While I don't think using the blast or daggers would be a balance issue at all, the feat doesn't actually allow it. (The warlock would be, what - 14th level? It's a little bit better than the eldritch chain blast shape, and on par with the eldritch cone, which he could take at 11th level.)

| So far, i've liked most of what i've seen in PHB II...I didn't think that I would. I've been wrong before.
My favorite stuff so far is the feats and expanded spells. I do like some of the alternate packages for some classes, specifically the wizard and sorc (sorc a bit more). The new base classes are all good, i've already approved them for addition to my home game.
