| I'm a little confused on the concept of keeping track of a character's caster level when cross classing. For example say I have a 9th lv wizard cross class to become a wizard 9th/ Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 1st (Complete Arcane pg.44) at the 10th level, does the character cast his spells at a caster level of 9 or 10? For the Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil, the Complete Arcane mentions that:
At each level, an Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil gains new spells per day (and spells know if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class to which she belonged before adding the prestige class level. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (such as the bonus feat sometimes gained by a wizard). If she had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming an Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil, she must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day and spells known.
So is it assumed that the wizard 9th/ Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 1st casts a fireball spell at a 9th caster level and therefore dealing 9d6 damage? Or is it 10th level and the fireball deals 10d6 damage?
I also remember that some spellcasting prestige classes in the DMG v3.5 increase the caster level for cross classing such as the Lore Master class where they state that spells per day, spells known, and caster level increase as a result of taking the class.
There is also the example in the Complete Arcane where the wild mage class has the wild magic ability such that (the book's example) a 8th lv sorcerer/ 1st lv wild mage now has to reduce the caster level by 3 for all spells cast from now on but can add 1d6 to the adjusted caster level when spells are cast. But from now on the base caster level is 6th assuming it was 9th to start with (8 lvs for sorc and 1 lv from wild mage).
So my question is how do you RPG players handle this and where can I find the rules about this or are there any house rules you use? It wouldn't be fun to find out late in the game that the 10th wizard/ 5th Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil character casting disintegrate deals 20d6 damage (10th caster level) on a failed save instead of 30d6 damage (15th caster level). Is there such thing as a base caster level like with the wild mage where your caster level is equal to the sum of the levels from your base spellcasting class levels plus levels from the prestige class that give you extra spells and spells per day but don't mention increasing your caster level?
Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks | | Latest Trade Thread | Trade References | My Trade Interface | Completed Trades/Purchases(70+) | |

| Hello,
nycfarmkid pretty much answered your question, but to be totally clear, read the description of the class or prestige class and go with what it says.
Your main example caster would be caster level 10 (as indicated), but some other combinations might end up being different depending on the prestige class you are talking about.
I don't have the Complete Arcane to hand, but I suspect the Wild Mage is a special case, as the entire idea of wild magic is that it is unpredictable.
