Ok, to we are going through red hand of doom- And we are trying to plan to take out the huge red dragon.
I am a druid level 7 a while back I used an item to awaken a gargantuan tree. my plan is when we see the dragon coming, to pump him full of fire resistance- cast spells like thorns and babua slime on him, then cast fly and invisibility on him. so when the dragon shows up- the tree initiates a flying grapple on the dragonthen I cast down draft and they both fall to the earth. The trees purpose in life is to help protect brindol from the red dragon and hobgoblins- am i missing anything?

The printed red dragon in Brindol is only a large red dragon. I'm sorry that your character is only level 7 when the fight at Brindol starts. What level did you start the adventure at? (Sorry, I don't know druid spells enough to comment on that part.)

we aren't yet ready for the fight at brindol- but we have no idea how much time we have left. so far we have cleared the keep- though we think many of the inhabitents fled- we assaulted the bridge and now we are at the flooded keep in the swamp. that didn't go real well.
the rest of the part are - a cleric of Corralen Latherion, our mage died- and is being replaced by a fighter specializing in archery, we recently lost our partys rouge and may never be replaced.

I assure you - the red dragon was huge.the black dragon we fought is large though,
the army is about 40 miles from brindol right now- and we are very weak from our fight against the black...we lost.

One thing you're missing is that awakening an animal or tree doesn't give you any special kind of control over them - there's no guarantee that the newly-sentient tree will agree to a plan that probably sounds like certain death.

actually- they will help with one task- and what I am trying to do is create a situation that is not certain death for the tree. the tree has a hardness of 10 and 96 hps. protection from elements will help him ignore over 80 pts of fire damage, resist elements will protect against 10 more- thorns and babua slime will mean that everytime the dragon attacks he will take 2d8 damage + the trees regular attack (2d8+10)

Ummm, Dragons have Blindsight, right? Won't it be able to detect the invisible tree?

A lot of us here are DM's, so I'm not going to ruin your DM's game trying to help you plan to kill the Red. I will tell you this much, though: the Ruins of Rhest are part 2 of the adventure, the Siege of Brindol is part 4. Your party should find the clues leading to part 3 (and the xp and wealth found therein) when you get your butts back into Rhest and finish off that dragon. Do that, and the Red Dragon in part 4 shouldn't be nearly as scary.

(p.s. The Black in Rhest in the adventure as written is only medium, so either your DM thinks you guys are tough enough to handle the bump in power from his advancing the Black an age category, or he just hates you.)

I concur with this thought. As a DM there are times that PCs overlook clues of things that may seem mundane or not that important. Might try looking at things "outside the box". For instance, changing your tactics to fit the situation, the way that a battle worked last time might not be the best plan of action.

actually a little of both- he didnt realize my wife has no clue how to pick spells, or that our fighter would die via lots of ogres.

It sounds like he's powering up the opposition, making the medium black dragon a large black dragon and having "lots" of ogres. The most I have seen in one encounter (and we haven't made it quite as far as you have) is two.

ok -here is what happened- we tried to sneak into the fort- using spells to disguise ourselves- I wild shaped into wolf form another one of us took goblin form, we had a lizard man and a hobgoblin- our cover was that me and the goblin and hobgoblin were part of the force based at koth's base. it worked well for a while- but instead of getting to fight a few small battles in the fort- we got 1 really big one. an ettin, a tough hobgoblin leader guy, a bunch of ogres, and near the end of the fight- a black dragon- it was murder. just as we thought we might win- 2 more tough hobgoblins arrived ( one was a ranger i think)I accept the fact that the nasty fight was partly my fault. I had cast call lightning and was using it to attack random bad guys- when they realized that only one of us spoke goblin...I think we will have an easier time of it this weekend. I hope...

Ouch--good infiltration is great until the cover is blown.

Infiltration is difficult in Red Hand of Doom unless you have multiple party members who are very good at it. I suggest you adopt guerrilla warfare - pick off small groups of enemies quickly and quietly if you can. If your druid, your cleric, and your archer can deal out enough silent death to finish an encounter in a round or two, you may not need to worry about multiple big groups coming down on you. :)

I now have a Have/Want list updated with all my rares! Stop by to take a look!
