| | In my homebrew I use names approriate to the nation the PC are in. For example I am are currently running a game in the nation of Hamor. In Hamor the names have a Russian/Eastern Europe stlye. So I just pulled up a website for Russian names for NPC. (also used some names from the NHL) If they were in the nations of Deverry or Rosenberry the names would be based on french names. | | Yes I am Gelatinous.

| My game has a Greek theme, so I can always look at one of my history or mythology books (The Peloponesian War by Thucydides is a good one) for names.
The book of Chronicles in the Bible is chock full o' names as well.

| | I'll use foreign names, anagrams, made-up names, whatever. Sometimes I've used the names of ancestors, too--if it sounds good enough. | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®? | |

That's a good one, I use it when I need a name generator.
Also, Redblade 3.5 (a character creation program) has a name generator, although its not a very good one. The character generator itself is pretty useful for quickly creating a character. | | Champion of the Revenant Knight of the Elf Duskblade Complete Trades: Oni, Kidkach, Melrune, callidusx3 | |

| I have a copy of the Elven dictionary that I use for elven names, which was common practice for Tolkien. Legolas means "green leaf" (I believe). I do the same thing for Elven cities. I have an elven port town whose name means water lily. Also, dwarf surnames always are two word combinations of dwarfish things (like Battlehammer, Oakenshield, etc...). First names are always two syllables and have hard sounds, usually using B's and G's. Sometimes, for human names, I just make up a nickname the character goes by. I had a rogue named Griff. He wore a medalion with a griffon to make people think his name had something to do with a griffon, but it was short for grifter. Occasionally, I'll use a name generator too. | | Completed trades: Gausse, Mazra, Pagansexy, Galerians, Lord_Raven, Drakkengi, Temujinn x2, Random Sasquatch, elf_ranger, Azuretide, Hung4treason, Griffrat (face2face), Nasamonkey Carpe Forum! | |

| | I usually make em up. I also play MTG and often steal names as my players won't realise it. Razia, Savra, Azorious are names of guilds in MTG but have been used as NPC names IMC. | | Trades: dj-chuckles (complete) Sales: Kestral.ca Bad Trade: Chaotic Good | |

I have at one time or another used..........
Online Name Generators History texts (usually when I should have been listening to the lecture) TV and movies Fantasy and non fantasy novels Other published RPG material. Random Internet finds Comic books

| The nice thing about EBoN, is that it take a directory of preexisitng names, and creates names out of that vocabulary. This allows you to dictate that a specific culture has a "sound" to it. It comes with about 100 different directories, many from obvious sources (Tolkien, Warhammer, Each of the Greyhawk countries, etc.) so that I can create names that are "logical" for the region/enemeis my PC's find themselves with.

| It's a very nice tool, that EBoN. Thanks to all. I imagine it would be great if you use a laptop, and need to quickly get a name up of a non-created npc. Cheers all! | | My Trading Thread | |

| I just randomly put syllables together in my head until it sounds ok. Made al my characters that way except once, when I named my dwarven fighter/cleric Dagon Silverhammer. That was a combination of Lovecraft (God of the deep: Dagon) and the Beatles (Maxwell Silverhammer).
