| | I'm working out a fighter/warlock build for Red Hand of Doom and wondering does the above combo work? Can I use Spring Attack to get a trip attack and regular attack with improved trip and use hideous blow to do my eldritch blast damage as well? Any suggestions for Red Hand characters? | AFAIK, Spring Attack cannot be used in the way you describe. You can only make one attack in a round when using Spring Attack, since it substitute an Attack Action. You cannot combine Full Attack with an Attack Action. You can still make a Move Action before or after the Spring Attack. Furthermore, Spring Attack specifically says "attack action with a melee weapon" so Trip and Hideous Blow are not suitable candidates for attacks. Sorry - should have added that I'll be tripping with a weapon - spiked chain. So move up, trip attack as spring attack with spiked chain, use improved trip to get the attack as they go down (assuming the trip succeeded), and apply the eldritch blast damage via Hideous Blow (channel EBlast through a melee attack). The build in question is a Human Fgtr 2/Warlock 4 that devotes all six feats to this - Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, EWP Spiked Chain, Combat Expertise, Improved Trip. | | Champion of the Yeti (large uncommon please!) | Yep, that works.
Just make sure you move both before and after the attacks are resolved, since that is the requirement of spring attack to prevent suffering an Attack of Opportunity (AoO). Particularly important if you spring attack a creature with reach, since you otherwise would suffer an AoO while closing.
Oh, and one other common mistake with trip is the AoO when the prone creature stands up. You can't use the AoO as the prone figure stands to re-trip them, since the AoO happens before the action that triggers it and you can't trip an already prone enemy. | | Champion of the Entire Monster Manual 1! | | If you want to up the combo a little, then take scout levels instead of fighter. You get spring attack for free, and can add the skirmish damage to the hideous blow damage. Gross, eh? | Yep, would work. Had a player use something very similar with a halbred. He and the party rogue made a wicked combo. As the creature would stand the AoO for standing would get a sneak attack with the flank for the rogue....
These two players would be screaming, "I said stay down!!!" as the creautres would fail wis checks (house rule) to stand up.....it was gruesome | | Ambassador of FUN!!! | |
