| | My wife wants to play a nymph in a one-on-one campaign, and the MM says it advances by HD rather than class levels. First off, I understand how to create the standard non-leveled character. But after that, does the character have to advance by HD? Also, the nymph has spells as a 7th level druid (despite having only 6 HD) and all the spell-like abilities and special qualities. So, if we advance her by HD, how does the spell progression advance? Is it on a HD equivilent basis? | | Completed trades: Gausse, Mazra, Pagansexy, Galerians, Lord_Raven, Drakkengi, Temujinn x2, Random Sasquatch, elf_ranger, Azuretide, Hung4treason, Griffrat (face2face), Nasamonkey Carpe Forum! | |

| | If she started out as a "full" nymph, she can advance any way she wants. If she has not yet advanced, according to Savage Species, she would need to finish that progression table. | | Official Delegate, Wizards of the Coast Against The Giants Called Shot: Huge Green Dragon Icons Called Shot: Gargantuan Prismatic Dragon

| Personally, I'd allow her to take a class.
I do, however, find the notion of your wife playing a nymph "one-on-one" with you quite interesting. Tell us more about it. Could be interesting as a LARP. [}:)] | | You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

I just plan on starting her as a solo character with ECL of 13- standard for a nymph.

[:0] I'll have to enforce a new house rule. [)]
I guess what I was really wondering is if she can stack her nymph HD with her druid level (if she choses) to increase her racial spell level. For example, if she has 6 HD as a nymph and has a effective druid caster level of 7, does she have a caster level 8 as Nymph 6HD + Druid lvl 1? At that point, wouldn't it be better for her to advance HD? She would (I think) trade off an animal companion and other miscellaneous druid stuff to keep advancing her caster level at a higher rate if they don't stack. | | Completed trades: Gausse, Mazra, Pagansexy, Galerians, Lord_Raven, Drakkengi, Temujinn x2, Random Sasquatch, elf_ranger, Azuretide, Hung4treason, Griffrat (face2face), Nasamonkey Carpe Forum!

| Notwithstanding what the rules officially say, i think i would allow her to take a class level (as previously suggested). It would appear more interesting for the player IMO over the long run to be able to get some flexibility in progression rather than the very limited HD advancement. You could then set her nymph powers either to remain at fixed levels, or to evolve to be somewhat aligned with her HD+LVL as you see fit for your campaign.

| Druid levels stack with her racial spellcasting. Note that this is also true for Rakshasa Sorcerers and many other creatures who "prepare and cast spells as an x level cleric/druid/sorcerer."
It won't increase her caster level on her dimension door spell-like ability, though. | | Champion of the Entire Monster Manual 1! (Click link to see current progress!) Uncommon Painting Competition 2 Winner

| | Thank you, Taliesin. This is what makes sense, I just couldn't find the source of such information. Do you know where that is stated?
