Hi, I'm a new DM and for my first session I want my players to face a group of bandit. But unlike the monster, playable race and classe have no CR. My players are 5 first level character. So according to DM guide I want an encounter EL1 or even EL2 since they are more than 4 and that will be the final battle of the session. But what is the CR of a first lvl mage, a first lvl warrior. I presume its not CR1 cause in that case I can only put one NPC encounter for an EL1. Can someone help me please,

Thanks

Signature... What is that ??? Ah yes its the thing we put below our post that almost no one take the time to read... At least that I dont take the time to read. Oh damn I wrote too much and now I have no more place for signature... Maybe next time...

Adding Levels to an NPC is equivalent to adding a CR to it as well (eg. Level 5 Human Sorcerer = CR 5). Remember that a Level 1 party facing a CR 1 encounter is assumed to be relatively easy for them, so that Level 1 fighter would not be much of a challenge but would most likely use up some of thier resources. An evenly matched encounter's CR would be much higher since the PCs would have as much chance of dying as living through the encounter.

I would go with a couple of warriors as leaders and see how that goes (if you are pressed for time look at the man at arms from ab set). Then after the adventure you can alwas use the same man at arms type stat and a low level PC class for the next stage for multiple adversaries in an encounter.....

(TIP: There are ways to run the encounter where each of the adversaries have a sperate initiative. This makes the combat much more fluid and difficult for a party to combat. At least this is my experince as the combatants are able to back one another up much like the PCs...)

NPC classes (i.e. warrior, adept, expert) are half the CR of their level , since they're relatively weak compared to PC classes. PC classes (fighter, wizard, ranger, etc.) have a CR equal to their level. So, for an Encounter Level 1 encounter you'd need to run two Warriors (CR 1/2 + CR 1/2). For an Encounter Level 2 encounter you could run 1 level 1 Fighter and two level 1 Warriors (1 + 1/2 + 1/2 = 2), or a level 1 Sorcerer and a couple of adpets, etc.

Correct me if I am wrong, but NPC classes are not half CR but instead thier CR is level -1, with CR 1/2 minimum.

Reezel is correct. Also, since this is the end-battle, I would make the EL a bit higher. If you use an equal number of 1st level NPC class enemies, this fight should be tough but not overwhelming. Using human bandits is effectively the same CR/EL as goblin warriors or orc warriors.
