| Just had to share this from our session tonight:
I've got a bunch of 10th-ish level characters camping out in the Dim Forest. Early in the night they were ambushed by Grell, and the wizard got really torn up. A Basilisk wandered into the camp later that night -- poor thing just wanted to get warm by the fire -- and petrified the paladin.
For the third encounter that night (it was a busy night in the forest) I rolled some fire beetles. I figured fine, no big threat, maybe the party will try and harvest them. I should at least be able to scare them a bit with the hovering lights from a distance...
The wizard is asleep when the encounter begins. After the watch sounds the alarm, the wizard wakes up, pretty cranky, and fireballs the beetles. Yes, well, 1d8 hit points each, that's that.
Moral of this story: Let the Wizard sleep.
[:p]

That's one of two morals associated with every story containing a wizard. The other moral is to coup-de-grace the buggers while they're still asleep. Takes all the hassle out of dealing with their spells [:P]
I think the high point of your story is the basilisk wandering into camp , minding its own business, just to get warm by the fire (I didn't mean to petrify anyone...) [:D] | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Y'know, I'm not sure how aware basilisks *are* of what they do. I mean, they're not terribly bright and have poor eyesight. They just look at people and suddenly... lunch! But the Paladin's warhorse made its save and stomped the poor thing to death.

I do believe I did use the phrase "scorched carapaces clattering to the forest floor." Poor beasties. [:(]
Between the fireball and the earlier flame strikes and scorching rays (from the battle with the grell) that was one defoliated section of forest.

At least there was no way for the Paladin to protest such violent damage done to the forest. (I hope there's no party druid... Or, Smokey the Bear will send one of his Aspects to smite the failed protector of the forest canopy) [)] | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! That's even funnier [:D]
I didn't mean to imply that the basilisk had some ulterior motive. It's really funny to think about how certain creatures act.
[Basilisk's thought process] Cold, cold, cold, light, hmmm, light warm, go towards light, warm, warmer, aaah...., what's that thing, it's very shiny, hey--where'd the statue come from, why does this other thing look mad, help, help, it's stomping me....[/Basilisk's thought process] | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Nope, no party druid. I'm not sure the paladin would care much; he's very much a city boy. And they moved on shortly thereafter, otherwise they would have gotten a... friendly visit from the local Wild Elves...

Yeah, it was the long-awaited sequel to "Curious George the Basilisk and the Village Full of Statues." [}:)]
The next random encounter is going to be some Forest Sloths. I love Giant Ground Sloths. They are wrecking machines. Good thing for the Conquistadores that the Aztecs didn't domesticate them. "Okay, let's get off the ship and impress these poor primitive OH MADRE DE DIOS!"
