| Hi all,
There is now a poll on the wotc-website about amount of Player Deaths in Tomb of Horrors. I'm currently halfway the adventure as a DM and none of my players have died yet, but I had to tweak down the mutated gargoyle (those stats were ridiciulous for its CR) quite a bit. Any experiences on your side?

| Original Tomb of Horrors? Or something updated?
With the original Tomb of Horrors I've either seen TPK or very limited numbers of deaths. All depends on the players (dumb players die quickly). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. | Total slaughters both times I went through it. However, the second time, I just didn't enter. The whole thing "felt" wrong when we saw the doors and such. So, my cleric suddenly "sprained" his ankle, and couldn't "walk" into the dungeon.
I told the others to go on. They knew where I'd be. Well, I waited for 4 days, and none of them reappeared. So, I went back to town and met their replacements. [}:)]
I got a bunch of XP, too. Killing stuff in the wild was fun! Ogres, a couple of trolls, even a hill giant wandered by on the trip back. Funny how they don't stand up real well when you smack 'em upside the head with a flame strike.... | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! | If you are tweaking down anything, you are missing the point of the module. PCs are supposed to die. Preferably many times. :)
I ran the module just before Halloween last year for my group. The Sphere of Annihilation did it's job very well.

The Sphere of Annihilation in the Devil Mouth? I have heard many stories about how that thing killed whole partys. HOW? After the first guy sticks his hand or head in the mouth and he disintigrates...dont the rest of the party catch the hint?

Yeah... a free downloadable updated version was put on the Wizards site. Along with White Plume Mountain and soon to be joined by expedition to Barrier Peaks.

| I agree its fun as a 1-shot...not as part of a campaign.

| That was long ago... Original tomb of horrors : 1 or 2 deaths (don't recall exactly). 1 of them was the juggernaut, and maybe acererak for the 2nd one. | | Vindicated Champion of the PSEUDODRAGON (Unhappy) vindicated champion of the DRYAD Against the giants called shot : huge cloud giant female Demonweb called shot : ghost | |

well, I'd guess my party is just careful. After they detected that it eminated strong necromantic magic they just went the other way. And if an 8th level monk falls down the 100 ft. oubliette he won't get killed. If you have a rogue with a decent search skill and someone with detect magic in the party, it seems like a survivable adventure.
As mentioned before: I only didn't agree with the extreme powerfulness of the mutated gargoyle: 6 attacks for +24/+24/+24/+24/+20/+20 with rend and at least 2d8+9 per attack? Add 199 hp and DR 10/bludgeoning and magic? That's sick IMHO. Thank god for the magic missiles and searing lights my party had prepared.
I am running the 3.5 version as part of an ongoing campaign, so I'd aprreciate some of my players to survive the ordeal.

Well, I think the effect is indistiguishable from teleportation, and other portals allow you to move around the Tomb that way.

| | I got a chance to DM this adventure on my vaction trip back home. I didn't have a single PC death (although a few close calls). Although the players did manage to lose all their clothing and one of them ended up changing genders and ailment. The players also somehow manage to skip 3/4 of the rooms with combination of luck, and some out the box thinking. | | My webcomic: http://www.sentimentalhorde.com Bringing world peace by conquering on nation at time! | |

| | The Tomb of Horrors might be deadly for a bunch of Level 1 to 4 chars. But it has far too many hints inbuilt so you can survive it easily. No deaths here. I even had to make it harder as I felt my players were getting bored (they were level 10 at the time). | | Upcoming Set Spoilers & Terrain tiles: www.lemonbutter.com/dd/ My Have/Want List | References | Complete Trade History Postal fee from US to Germany is only $4.50 or $8.40! True dat! The whole point of tomb of horrors is to kill pcs. It's brutal

I have a history of dealing with forced teleportation effects after the rest of the party finishes a room, so the party just assumed it was a teleporter. [:D]

| Sorry but where is the "Tomb of Horrors" brutal? Right at the beginning you get this long puzzle text which clearly gives a hint to every hidden exist which is really not hard to figure out.
Exept for the chessy endfight the dungeon is a picknic. :)
