I've begun to set up some affiliations (see PHB2) for my Ulek campaign, as the rules will help greatly with what is turning into a complicated situation. I'd appreciate some help with rewards/duties etc. for the affiliations.

The primary post for the affiliations is on my multiply site here:
http://merricb.multiply.com/journal/item/90

However, I'll be happy to discuss the matter here. Here's what I have so far:

Fochluchan Bardic College - trainer of the Fochlucan Lyrists, protectors of knowledge, and...

Symbol: ?
Background, Goals and Dreams: In the early days of the Flan people, the bards were the loremasters and heralds of kings. In those days, the bards were more affiliated with the druids of the Old Faith than now, and combined the great arts of magic, song and swordplay.

It seems clear that the branch of magic we know as arcane was less developed in those days, or, at least, seen only as a tool of evil men, such as the mage-tyrant Vecna. The bardic colleges were the only places where the arcane arts were properly studed, and, even then, their use was restricted.

With the migrations after the Twin Cataclysms and the rise of the Kingdom of the Aerdy, the druidic way of life began to fade across the Flanaess, and the bards that served them likewise. However, as the Old Faith has remained strong in the County of Ulek, the lore of the Great Bards has also not been forgotten.

The Fochluchan College has not been immune to the passing of time, however. Most of its apprentices will never become more than lesser bards, and only the most worthy are permitted to become greater bards. The use of arcane magic has also expanded within the college, although it is still very limited - especially when compared to places like the great city of Greyhawk!

The college is a refuge for bards, scholars and lesser wizards, for the greater kind of wizard is rare within Ulek. Its chief interest lies in the recording of history and the instruction of the young, although the fewer Greater Bards act as heralds of the Count. There is tension between the college and the members of the Old Faith as to how the young should be instructed, as, of late, the college has begun to move more away from its druidical roots.

This is in no small manner due to Roibhilín (NG Human Bard 6/Druid 2/Rogue 2/Fochluchan Lyrist 4), the current master of the college. He is a contemporary of Lewenn, Count of Ulek, and the two were good friends as students. Roibhilín (ROH-ve-lin) is fascinated with arcane magic, and does not share the prejudices of the Old Faith towards its pursuit.

Members: The college is a refuge for bards, scholars and lesser wizards, for the greater kind of wizard is rare within Ulek.

Affiliations are a pretty cool idea, I think, but a *ton* of work to implement, particularly in campaign worlds that are already very detailed (whether due to being pre-published or simply in use for many years.)

The sample ones are a big help but I think we could benefit from a more generic set of samples, as they sometimes delve into fairly specific ideas:

- generic order of knighthood
- generic thieves' guild
- generic wizards' college

That sort of thing.
