| Recently, we've had several sessions where my players have fought stirges. Because they are tiny, I've been granting the characters an attack of opportunity as the stirge enters the square. Because their scouts are out front, the stirges are usually facing high dex characters with combat reflexes. If the initial combat involved six stirges, usually only two will get an attack because the 18 dex character picks off four.
I believe that allowing the AoO is correct according to the rules, but I wanted to double check. It seems like they shouldn't be the Stirge Suicide Squad, but I cannot see a way for the stirges to avoid the AoO. | | | |

| They can't avoid the AoO. It's really the PCs best weapon against them.
But that, my friend, just allows you to throw twice as many at them! Look on the bright side! [}:)]

| you could grant the stirges concealment due to some levels of darkness, forest cover or whatever...or as Jim put it so well, throw twice as many at them. I like that idea the best.

| Why're the stirges always attacking in front? They should swarm in from all sides, and (IMO) being mosquito-like, should be very active at night, when the party isn't necessarily adventuring.
If half the party consists of high-Dex characters with Combat Reflexes, then they are very good against this particular challenge, so throw different challenges at them. How do high-Dex Combat Reflexes types do against ogre barbarians? [:D] | | I now have a Have/Want list updated with all my rares! Stop by to take a look! Nothing beats waking a party up from their slumber by attaching giant mosquitos to their faces [}:)]

| Stirges can achieve surprise. Flat footed-no dex sort of nerfs AoO and Combat Reflexes. Attack at night, or in dark places where they usually reside, for 20-50% concealment depending on light sources, and probably surprise as well. Let those little suckers go to work.
