| Hey all.
I have a player who's running a Half-Gold Dragon Fighter, and since inception he's been planning to enter the Dragon Samurai Prestige Class. [Miniatures Handbook methinks]
Of course, now he's had the PC on the table he's realised that the PrC isn't really suited to him. He loves the flavor, but a lot of the abilities overlap and are thus useless.
The chief suspect: He'll gain Resist 5 Fire, which will increase as he levels up to resist 10, 20 and eventually immunity. The down side? He's already immune fire.
So he's asked me if we could exchange the energy immunities for something else that hee'd get some use out of. My first through was for him to just stick with Fighter and get the flavor through Feat Customisation, but he's pretty set on this PrC.
So, whattaya think? I thought maybe just swap them for bonus feats, and maybe even force them to be draconic feats from Races of the Dragon, to maintain flavor.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thankya!

| Speaking personally, and without looking at the prestige class, I'd probably allow him to do switch out the resistance ability for another element, but gain it one step slower.
You'd not be being a hard-ass by making him choose (redundancy or not), though. Many prestige classes provide redundant abilities. Just as a minor example, many prestige class oriented toward martial characters are going to grant weapon and armor proficiencies the entering PC almost certainly already has. You wouldn't compensate them for the redundancy, right?
Oh, and simply allowing bonus feats, IMO, is way too generous. Increased options automatically translate into increased power. One other possibility might be to grant and mandate a bonus feat-chain that fits the class but probably otherwise wouldn't be picked. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| I tend toward flexibility. I'd try to figure out something else for his character to get, but I don't think I'd go with resistance to something else.
Maybe he could have fast healing 1 whenever would have taken 10 or more fire damage in a round. This would give him a flavor-based reason to prefer fighting against fire-users.

| If you're playing it by the book, he's gotta take the bad with the good. Once the favors start, eveyone wants them. If it's a 'fun' campaign and you want to keep the players happy, be flexible. You know your players better than we do. Maybe show a little mercy to an inexperienced player. My own experience, players prefer fairness over favors. There can be no arguments when you go by the book. Players need to stick to the rules. Cheers

| | I say be flexible. Switch it out for another element but maybe limit it so that he is not too powerful, eventually being immune to two elements. | | Jason Slingerland

| Was this reprinted somewhere, because the one in Miniature's Handbook only goes to resistance 20. You might want to check that.
Anyways, I wouldn't change it out. As was preiously said, overlap does happen. Besides, he essentialy has better than that ability of the class for all those levels anyways. Inform him that he doesn't have to max out the class. For him, I'd definitely go only 9 levels at most since the final level only is more resistance, which he already has if he stays with the gold dragon samurai.
If he really wants to change, he still meets the requirement for silver and bronze dragon samurai (electricity and cold resistance), which depending on how you and he sees it could be silly or interesting. The class allows you to choose the dragon smurai type when you enter the class with the only requirement being alignment (the only that changes by type that is) so he does have flexibility there.
I do like your idea of suggesting going fighter instead with the appropiate feats.
