| I haven't read the book. I scanned it to see what monsters were in it.
Creatures (if I counted right): 105 Number of Spawn of Tiamat: 14 Number of Old Creatures with Levels/Templates: 30+ Number of Creatures with Miniatures released: 13+
It looks like the depth per creature is excellent. It's the creature selection and amount I am disappointed with. After looking it through, I regretted buying it. It might grow on me over time, but I have initial regret. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

| About the Spawn of Tiamat: For example, there is a Bluespawn Godslayer. There is no other color of spawn that is called a Godslayer. Likewise, the only Razorfiend is a greenspawn. Also, there are varying types of each color. There are only two blackspawn, but four bluespawn, for instance.

That is an understatement. That is one of the dorkiest creatures I have ever seen. It looks like a big black blob with a vaguely (highly obsese) black dragon looking face on it. It doesn't look like a spider in the slightest, though the description mentions something about spider. | | "Look to God and live." | One of the things that I thought was really nice was the "camp encounters" Such as the lizard folk. Where there was pretty much an entire village for your PC killing pleasure. Starting off with the standard soldier, then the special soldier (the Wasp Rider very cool) then the badder soldier, then the shaman and finally villiage leader. Very cool concept and done with a few creatures, i.e. the orcs and some ogres as well.
I like the maps that tend to go along with the monster entry as well. Just a nice over all touch IMHO... | | Ambassador of FUN!!!

I agree that the maps are a nice addition. I was surprised to see them. (Note: they are not skirmish size, but are full page, scaled down maps that look nice.) | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

| The real star of this book is the layout. The new stat blocks and expanded information (like the knowledge checks!) are inspired.
Now, if only the creatures were worthy of the formatting. I think I saw maybe two that I would use, not counting leveled creatures that already exist in other books (like gnolls and orcs and lizardfolk.) A number of them just look plain goofy.
I think this book is proof that WOTC is running out of creature ideas, and they're just milking us for cash.

| For the most part, I'm not impressed (so I won't be purchasing this book).
However, there were a few interesting monsters in there (just a few) and I would really like to see more dragon spawn made (especially the greenspawn sneak & leaper, the bluespawn ambusher & burrower, the whitespawn 'ice skater', and redspawn arcaniss. Other monster I would like to see made are: Tomb spider Various Yuan-ti Various Gnolls (especially the half fiend)
I was really unimpressed with rehashing older monsters and adding class levels, which should have been taken care of in Savage Species. Also some of the new monster are just plain silly: Blackspawn fat-stupid-spider Blackrock Triskelion Demon Squirrels The clockworks Corrupture (looks like ooze/slime to me) Fang Golem (actually, I think most of the golems in the MM are just plain retarded) Oaken Defender and a few more that aren't pictured in the gallery.
Overall, I think WOTC should have waited longer to come up with better material.

No, I don't mean that. I'm just tired of all the strange things that are in MM2, MM3, Fiend Folio, and, for example, the Wrackspawn and the Blackspawn Spiderthingy from MM4. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

Simple solution. Don't bother reading the entry and don't bother running the monster. [:D]
For every monster that is hated, there will be someone who thinks it's the coolest thing since sliced bread. I like getting a variety of oddball stuff in the Monster Manuals. I know someone out there will eventually run it.
While I prefer less bizarre critters most of the time, I've used some of the oddball stuff for variety/shock value. One of my players loves to throw the really oddball monsters at us when he DMs (he picks stuff even I've only read through once and I'm the primary DM).

I read through the book yesterday, and I specifically read all of the Wrackspawn entry...I didn't see anything referring to us. | | I browsed over the entry for WTF at the FLGS, and didn't notice anything about Maxminis on the first pass, but I didn't pay deep attention. I do think the concept isn't as bad any more. I like the "Wrackspawn in Faerun" entry, as I have read about the raids on the Wall of the Faithless, and I can feel comfortable using these creatures now knowing they have a real place in the world. | | Completed trades: Gausse, Mazra, Pagansexy, Galerians, Lord_Raven, Drakkengi, Temujinn x2, Random Sasquatch, elf_ranger, Azuretide, Hung4treason, Griffrat (face2face), Nasamonkey Carpe Forum!

| According to those who went to the Dreamblade-thingy, the reference is in there. Nobody has commented on it (that I've seen) though beyond to say that it is in there.

| Having gone through it, I can safely say that it is time to stop making more oozes, WotC, you're out of ideas and they're not a very interesting monster type.
In general I like it although I think the space per monster is maybe a little TOO much. I do like getting the pre-statted examples of existing monsters with class levels and such.
In specific terms, I like the addition of a couple more evil fey, and the spawn are generally pretty cool. | | Anson on WotC boards

| The pre-statted monsters are awesome. The new monsters are less so. After a casual inspection, there weren't more than a handful that I see myself using. Honestly, new monsters is pretty low on my priority list. I have tons of minis for monsters I haven't used yet. Until I've thrown every cool monster in the other 4 monster books (MM1-3, FF), I'm in no rush to use the new cool toy.

| The wrackspawn entry did give me a new respect for the creature, if not the actual mini (I liked the picture in the book, but didn't really resemble the mini IMO.
I'm really on the fence about whether or not to buy this book. I like the spawn, and always enjoy reading more about creatures I've seen in skirmish (justice archons, bloodhulk, etc). Just not sure what's left after that balances out the cost of the book. | | "Call no man happy til he is dead" -E Cobham Brewer
