Once upon a time, when I was but a lad (20+ years ago), I had a Dragon Magazine that had an article about a sub-class fighter called a Weapon Master. From what I remember: became proficient in melee weapons, not range weapons. Had armor restrictions. Had a minimum dexterity requirement.

Do any of you old timers remember this? All my books are old, I haven't picked up the 3.5 yet and my group wants to start RPGing more and it looks like I will be taking the helm (DMing). Is there anything like this in the new books?

Champion of "Ember, Monk Champion"

Vindicated Champion of the "Mounted Dragon Knight"

Umm im pritty sure the complete worrior has the Weapons master, but its a little bit differnt than you discribed. They also have new weapon specializing in the PH2 or atleast feat trees for you to specialize with a specific weapon...

The AD&D Weapon Master variant wasn't ever really translated verbatim into 3.x (that I've seen).

There is a weapon master in 3.0 Sword and Fist. Closest variants in 3.5 are the Kensai (awesome PrC) and Exotic Weapon Master both in the Complete Warrior.

I'm partial to the Kensai (specializes in one specific weapon) for a weapon master. The Players' Handbook 2 also has specific weapon specialization options.

Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie?

OK, what is 3.0 Sword and Fist? Sorry folks, it's been a long time since I RPG'd. I plan to get the 3.5 players hand book, dungeon masters guide, and monster manual (basic?). I know I have a lot to catch up on. Any basic stuff I should plan on starting out with?

Sword and Fist was the splat-book for warriors during the 3.0 era.

When 3.5 came out, S&F was deemed obsolete, so many people dropped the book in favor of Complete Warrior (the 3.5 equivalent.)
