Ok- so I think I saw this somewhere before- if not i need help balancing it out.

Ship Mage:
PC gives up ability to gain a familiar- instead gains ability to bond with a ship he has been on for at least 1 week.

1st level- share spell(abjurations only) does not apply to people on the ship- JUST to the ship. Sense Breech ( can feel weakness and holes in the hull)

5th level- Fill Sails- ship gains movement +20

10th Level- can "Talk to Ship" - Wizard knows anything said while on ship with a dc 20 listen check.

Just an idea- too powerful? help me tweak it!

I think it looks great, and really interesting. (So I'm stealing the idea.) I was going to say that I thought the 10th leve ability was too much, but I changed my mind. As long as people have at least as much awareness of the existence of "ship mages" as they have of normal familiars (i.e., some, but not necessarily much), I think it works well.

Okay, I'm trying to wrap my head around this idea and I'm having trouble doing it.

I actually like the idea but how does a mage bond with an inanimate object. A familiar may have very low intelligence, but at least it has some. Is the whole idea just to say the hell with it and have the mage bond with the ship anyway?

I think atuned might be better word choice. I like the idea thiugh. I think the 1oth level power might be a bit too much. I was thinking that maybe the DC could be variable based on distance. The wizard would still have to choose this as a feat, correct?

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

yes- this would be a feat AND would replace his familiar.
I like the idea for the variable DC for the 10th level ability.
Basically- (storywise) the mage would spand 1 week performing a ceremony- annointing the ship- and in quiet meditation. I think It gives a real place on the ship to mages- other then artillery.- a position nearly as important as captain.

I really like it, but what about for Sea Captains and such? Could there not be a version for them?

I would require the mage to perform a ritual with 100 GP component and is only able to cast ritual after "dismissing" a ship for one year. It would give some more limits on it, but a wizard or sorcerer is bound to a specific familiar, this would allow them to just switch out the ships at will.
