In yesterday's game, the wizard and paladin players devised a plan by which the wizard would cast "fly" on the paladin's mount, and the paladin would then be riding a flying mount for the duration of the encounter.

On the spot, i saw no reason why the paladin's mount could not be the subject of the "fly" spell, and carrying the paladin is within his carrying limit so that doesn't seem problematic. However, i also ruled that the paladin could not use his usual ride skill to control the airborne horse, since neither is trained for that purpose. Since the paladin cannot speak to his horse, he'd have to let the horse decide where he goes. The horse does have 7 intelligence, so perhaps basic stuff could be explained successfully...

I'm rather comfortable with my ruling, but i wonder if others have encountered this situation before, and even in the negative, how you would manage such a situation.

What if the paladin could speak with animals somehow? (The players have briefly discussed trying to achieve this in the future.)

Thanks,

Sky

If they wanted this to occur regularly, I'd have them use Handle Animal to train the horse. This would be time consuming, and require that the party's arcane caster is tied up casting the fly spell repeatedly during the training. After a month or so of downtime and some impressive Handle Animal checks, I'd be fine with a horse being a suitable mount while flying. I'd probably still increase the DC on all ride checks by 5 while the mount was flying (since even though it's been trained, it's still kind of an oddball thing to be doing).

A flying horse isn't a big stretch from a pegasus (which is a suitable alternate mount for a paladin).

I have had this happen in one of my adventures before, and I had the paladin roll a reflex check when the horse grew scared and atempted to bolt. A horse, or even a warhorse is trained by desensitizing it to combat, noise, contact ect. When faced with the unacustomed sensation of flight, I believe the horse would become frightened. I would however allow a Handle animal check DC25 to calm the animal, and a further DC30 check to control it while in flight.

Thanks for the replies.

Zenthrus: your training suggestion and DC increased by 5 suggestion appear sensible to me. If they decide to continue on that path, i'll probably use that.

The Hunter: i admit that a normal horse would probably get very scared and a REFL save would be in order, but the paladin's mount is no normal animal (INT = 7). If it sees the humans casting fly spells regularly, i think it would understand when the same happens to it.
