I've made a quick remedy for those games that have the PCs carrying around small stores on their backs. Now they can't pick up every single piece of arms and equipment to sell. I modeled these after the Neverwinter Nights inventory screens. It also has a quick way of accounting weight. These are by no means accurate with the 3.5 rules, I just wanted a quick and easy way to keep track of space and weight as a house rule. I just use a china marker or dry erase pen to mark off the squares. If anyone wants these in Photoshop form, just chime in, if there's enough of you I'll put up a link here.

Green is light load, yellow is medium, and red is heavy. On the bag of holding, each type increase lets you add two more rows of space. Most items can only be put in vertically. The square and horizontal items are noted. Of course you can change these rules to meet your needs.

It'sa very intersting idea, but I'm not seeing how weight comes into this? How is this easier than just doing a running calculation of weight? I've never played NWN so maybe there is something that I'm missing, but although useful to really determine whether you can carry somthing, as of now without more explanation I don't see it as easier for calculating encumberance.

I think in this case, it's encumbrance based more on volume than on actual weight. It's a very visual way to check encumbrance, instead of a mathematical way. Simply an alternative. If I were to adapt this (normally our campaigns don't even worry about encumbrance), I'd assign each square an approximate weight value, and then assign most items a weight in terms of squares.

TygrHobbes - the only glaring problem I can see, is that I don't see a way to differentiate between a Str 8 halfing wizard, and a Str 20 half-orc barbarian. Normally, I'd expect the half-orc to be able to sling the halfling onto his back and hardly notice! Perhaps extend the green/yellow/red areas down a row for each point of str bonus? (Similar to your bag of holding extension.)

Older editions used to differentiate items for encumbrance reasons. That rolled up carpet might only weigh 30 lbs but carrying a rolle up carpet is far more encumbrancing than the mere weight. Imagine fighting with one of those over your shoulder (or a canoe, etc.) Not very graceful I'd say.

kestrel.ca - Yes, I was thinking the same thing about large and small creatures and those with different strengths. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with your suggestion of adding or subtracting green rows. I was thinking of every 2 points of strength (+ or -) you could move the green over a few spaces. I think I'd start the chart at 12 strength. Also, the weight of an item is somewhat represented by how many spaces a certain item takes up. You can see for example that a greatsword takes up 10 squares and a short sword takes up only 3. A greatsword is wider as well, that represents it taking up more space on the person.

It's totally up to the DM on how many spaces he wants a certain item to take up. My representation of an item may be different than someone elses. The top white portion sizes can be used to judge items sizes somewhat, it's mostly there just to see what the character has equipped (you have space to draw little pictures if you want [:)])

One of the reasons I made this is that when trying to calculate 7-8 PCs base weight and then adding all the items they find along the way it becomes a math nightmare trying to keep track of all the numbers. I just wanted a quick way to jot down the items and visually see if they can fit more items on them. I never used encumbrance or weight before, but it got out of hand when everyone would try to take every single item not nailed down to sell. This way I can add a simple way of getting both rules in the game without any hassle.

Don't most PCs exit a dungeon dragging three or four large sacks of loot?

Once while playing Return to Temple of Elemental Evil, we actually used a wagon we found to load up all the looted gear to sell later. We parked it in a storage room and when it was full took it back to town! We knew there was to much to carry, but the wagon helped us get it all back. And then we had to rent/take over a building to hold all our loot while we continued to adventure because it was to far to the nearest town that could fence it for us. Of course, the rogue got to set some traps as did the spellcasters, hoping that it would still be there when we got back.
