This first-level spell is 1 swift action to cast on a weapon. It lasts 1 round per level. It adds 1d6 damage on a successful hit. The wielder can sacrifice 5 HP to make the weapon add 3d6 damage on a successful hit.

This seems incredibly powerful to me ... so much so that I wonder if I'm not missing something. A drawback I'm not seeing. For the most part the spells in PH2 seem very well balanced, so this one is throwing me for a loop.

Thoughts?

It seems powerful, but not incredibly so, to me. One thing you didn't mention is that although it potentially lasts 1 round/level, the spell ends as soon as it does damage. In other words, you only get the damage once.

What about it seems so powerful? 3d6 for a first level spell? That it's a swift action? Or the combination?

Not to mention, anyone casting it at first level and spending their HP to enhance it will be half-dead already.

Also to put it in perspective, there is a first level paladin spell called Divine Sacrifice if I remember correctly that does 5d6 points of damage on the first attack a round (if the first attack misses, then the power is lost for the round) and you take 10 points of damage automatically whether the atack hits or not, and this lasts 1 round/point of charisma.

nearly anyone can use it, Assassin 1,blackguard 1,cleric 1,duskblade 1,sorcerer/wizard 1.

basically it infuses the weapon touched with energy and gives you an extra 1d6 damage on your next attack, 3d6 if you voluntarily take 5 hps damage.

The spell is in the players handbook 2.I,m not sure I can go into any more detail without violating copyright.

i absolutely love this spell. in my last game, my level 4 cleric, cast it, charged into combat, then swing, connects and i dealt 23 damage. followed by a cleave on the next monster ... and dropped that one too. insane. sure i lost 5 health, but i dropped 2 monsters .. the second monster was injured only left 3 hp, so my battle axe took it out

Blade of Blood isn't overpowered. You only get the damage once (and with a penalty for the big shot).

For overpowered 1st-level spells, see Power Word Pain. Yikes!

Yep I dissallowed powerword pain from my games as a 1st level spell, I did say i would let it in as a 3rd.

I heard a rumor on the WOTC boards that two powerword spells got their levels switched in error. This would explain the underpowered 3rd level powerword deafen, it just doesn't seem like a 3rd level spell to me.

It's in Races of the Dragon. I find that spell is not broken for PCs, because it doesn't last long enough for it to have it's full effect. It is broken for NPCs because all they need to do is cast and then run away and let the spell take it's course. I also wouldn't allow it in my game personally because of this, but that is just me.
