I've got a question, I hope someone can help me out.  It deals with creatures who have SR, specifically how they can be healed and drink potions.  First, the facts:

In the DMG it states that harmless spells automatically fail against SR checks

Creatures with SR can lower their SR for one round as a standard action

Drinking a potion is a standard action.

Knowing this information, how can a creature with SR drink a potion and have it work?  Since both are a standard action and a potion is a spell completion item, it looks like no creature with SR could have a potion work on them.  It would also seem that unconscious creatures with SR can not ever be healed by magical means (spells, spell-like abilities) since they cannot lower their SR to accept the healing.  Is there an errata on this somewhere, it does not seem to make a whole lot of sense

When put that way it would be quite a conundrum and SR would be almost worthless.

Fortunately, it's not as bad and no errata is needed.  Potions, while recreating spells are not spells or spell like effects, which are the only things that SR is applicable against, so a monster can drink away.  SR also specifically says that it does not apply against a creatures items, which poitions count as. Otherwise, creatures with SR couldn't use weapons, stat bump items, etc.

As for being unconscious, you are correct.  If you are unconscious you cannot lower your SR because you can't take any actions. In this case it is a hinderance nd potentially deadly if you need healing fast, but that is the price you pay to have a layer of protection against spells.  Luckily, PC SR is usually a lot lower than a monster's SR and mostly comes fom spells which will go away with time.  You still get a check to get through it so to say someone will never be healed is extreme.  It is just harder.

So, harmless spells still get a caster level check?  If so, that's good news

You're right. In the PHB on page 177 it says harmless for SR is like harmless for saves.  Unless dropped, it still can prevent the spell.  I think the confusion is in the way they worded it.  The intent is to say that SR applies to harmless as well as harmful.  Just because a spell is harmless doesn't mean it automatically affects a creature.  Since most of these spells are cast out of combat it really doesn't matter.

Oh, and something you might consider is that SR doesn't come into play with your own spells cast on yourself. This does you no good if you are unconscious, but otherwise it is a neat tactic.
