Has anyone out there had the chance to see both the Paizo map packs and the WotC dungeon tiles? Or bought both of them? If so, how do you feel about both products? Are they compatible? Do you think one is better suited to your needs than the other, and if so why?

Physically, the Paizo map packs are closer to the DDM tiles.  Put tiles together to create the various areas.  Thin cardstock with decent graphics.

The WotC dungeon tiles are a much sturdier construction.  They are thick and durable.  However, there isn't has much variety as with the Paizo packs.  The features are mostly dungeon corriders, rooms and dungeon features (admittedly, this is only the first of three announced sets).

I don't see much problem with using them together.  If you are very easily annoyed, you might have problems with the thicknesses of the two products.  Still, there aren't any scale problems.

Thanks for the comments.

When you say thick, how thick is that (for the WotC dungeon tiles)?

Easily as thick as good boardgame cardstock.

Whereas the Pazio is pretty darn thin - i was definitely dissapointed with the quality of the Pazio map packs.

Although it is true that our map tiles are thin, considering what they are used for, this is not a huge drawback. What we loose in thickness we make up for in art quality and variety of pieces in a single pack. That said, I will certainly pass your concern on to our design team. Jason Bulmahn Game Mastery Guy

Since posting my question, i've read a few comments about the Paizo maps being too thin and having to be fixed to the gaming table somehow, or else they have a tendancy to move about.

Jason: it's good to know that Paizo follows up on consumer comments. I'll probably try to have a look at the products anyway if there's any on display at my RPG store, as i have indeed read very good comments about the art on the maps. I admit however that having them moving about during play (on a table where there are a lot of minis and PC sheets and dice being handled) is a major issue from my standpoint.

Another comment (for what it's worth since i haven't actually bought the product): although i appreciate being able to recreate large city or graveyard or other specific areas, it would be fun if most map sections had the possibility of being interchangeable. My understanding of the Paizo product is that you need to assemble the map sections according to a specific order since the images extend from one map section to the next. Although that probably makes for a nice overall setting, my RPG use would require that the maps preferably differ from one encounter to the next, and thus i'd prefer to have maps that are mostly interchangeable - although you could have, say, a few map sections that could be used by pairs (or more, if the other map sections are not *required*).

Edit: of course, please correct me if i'm wrong about the product and how i understand it.

Cheers,

Louis
