As I was strolling around the forum this morning, a thought hit me. What could I do to make the roleplaying forum better? I honestly didn't have an answer. So I put it to all of you: What could I do to make the roleplaying forum better? What would you want to see more of? I value all of your input, and will do my best to support each idea. So...I leave it to all of you: Any ideas?

I would like to see a Campaign make it around these forums again, but I think the last batch of them all died out relatively quickly...

I'll have to give it some thought what else I'd like to see happen to the beloved RPG forum.

Very good idea. Sadly, I don't have the time to run a game at the moment, as i just got a new job, so I'm pretty happy that dj-chuckles stepped up In the meantime i will check with a friend of mine who is running a PBEM game, and see if I can post the "story" version of his game. It's quite entertaining. If people don't find it so, I can always give it the axe

Let me know if any of you have any more ideas

thanks guys

For the lay person that i am (as far as PBEM or forum campaigns are concerned): can you give a detailed explanation how it works, since there is no real-time interaction? How do you handle combats, or any type of action generally, since simply searching a room could take days unless you're constantaly emailing one another.

Thanks,

Sky

I'd be willing to play in a Maxminis campaign. I usually have more characters than games to play in, so this would be a wonderful chance flex my creative muscles!

D'you know what would also be neat? Have a tournament or something every year and the winner wins minis donated by someone....it would be sweet.

This is both easy and hard to answer since the exact mechanics of it varies based on what is going on. If the situation is non-combat, I write out the description of the area from their characters eyes.
..They respond with what they want their characters to do.
..I take their responces and weave them into prose, working out conflicting information or desires with a few quick IM messages or emails. If two fighters want to claim a certain weapon in a hoard, you might read something like, "Solgar strode towards the massive pile of disgarded weaponry, his eyes on the gilded handle of the greatsword just visible beneath a rusted out breastplate. As he reached for the blade, the weapon lurched and slid out of reach as Dannigren suddenly rose from the other side of the pile and held the greatsword aloft ."
"Imagine, Solgar. Someone throwing away a fantastic weapon like this!" (Depending on who was closest to the thing in previous posts, initiative, movement rates, etc.) A halfling 60 feet away is unlikely to race the half-orc beside it for the sword.

For combat, things get a little less cut and dry.
This is where IF, AND, and OR statements come in handy.

I always tend to break up combats into small one to two round chunks so that there is some flow but still a lot of mutability as well in case things change (new foes show up, allies fall, your target gets defeated earlier than expected, etc.)
..I handle all dice rolls and weave the results into an exciting battle scene.
..I try to end each battle snippet with a cliffhanger of some sort.
..The players send their next round or two of action in and rinse, repeat.

If one or more players have their characters lag behind or split off, they get solo posts until they buy the farm or regroup with the others.

That's all I've got off the top of my head. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Grim. Interesting stuff.

I wonder if i'd have the time to do this, but it looks like an interesting experience. What is the usual expected rate of advancement of such an online adventure? Are you expected to email once every day, multiple times per day, multiple times per hour, once every other day...?

Hmmm....I hope that this will always be a place for polite discussion. I will do my best to take all advice from all of you. I don't believe in bad/stupid ideas. These are just ideas that have to be worked a little more. That said, I encourage freedom of speech. I don't have the power to control what people say....yet. I will say that I hope everyone remembers that this is a place for open discussion and even criticism, but no personal attacks. It's up to me to guide the forum, but it's up to you guys to make it fantastic. Thanks guys

Each of my seven players emails me once a day (with emails between players to coordinate with other players sometimes).

The chapter B posted represents 8 days of collected posts. Other chapters are shorter or longer (sometimes much longer) depending on the games events.

Play-by-post or play-by-email has some great advantages in that anyone can go back later and "remember" an NPC's name or other detail.

The DM has got to be very organized, however, as they are going to be doing all the rolling based off their copies of character sheets, tracking treasure gained and spent, charges used, and spell slots remaining. Excel is your freind here.

Posting generally takes me anywhere from an hour to two depending on distractions and the quality of what the player's send me. sometimes I get full quotes I can use verbatim and sometimes I get, I check behind the statue.

I like it a lot and my writing skills have gotten a real workout with the format.

I suggest trying it and starting small.

I'd say just ignore the inflammatory responses that aren't helping.  Linking to the SRD however is an entirely different matter.  I always link to, or cut and paste, the relevant rules section if I can, as well as answer the question.  Some people don't know this document exists.  Just simply answering the question is like feeding a man for a day.  I see pointing to the pertinent text more along the line of teaching someone to fish.Â

I try to be active in answering rules related questions, I hope I wasn't someone who caused you to stop asking questions.  You shouldn't feel like you can't ask.  I say ask away.Â

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

I love to read any story reprorts here of such campaigns, totally loved Shoes account of his RHOD campaign. This would read a bit similar, only more interactive.

great stuff, great ideas!

Well Bozak, the rules discussions always lead into insults because that's just how the rules lawyers are. Every gaming site I visit has problems with insults in the rules discussion forums.

They like to prove everyone wrong and they let it go to their head. I don't think they even realize they are being insulting half of the time.

Enworld Mods do a pretty good job dealing with that when it happens. But it's expected, so I wouldn't let it get to you if you're the target.

It's sad. People should be able to discuss rules civily. I don't understand why this topic in gneral degenerates so quickly in the way you described

I'm generalizing when I say this, but my experience with interacting with the typical D&D player is that they love to prove how smart they are and how much more they know than you do. So all the rules gurus enjoy making you look like an idiot.

I guess they belittle other players to make themselves feel better for all the times people belittle them for their lack of good social skills.

I think the Enworld Rules Forum is the best place to get help. There's still a few jerks there, but way fewer than on other websites. Most of the guys there that know the rules are really nice & helpful. Even so, the guys that are rude still know their rules

What was the Simpson's quote? "In order for someone to look good, someone else has to look bad. And I'm tired of making others look good." Seems appropriate here.

Anyways, if people feel that you can't have good rules discussion on this forum, then maybe we should all work on making this site just as good as on Enworld. I so enjoy this site and recommend it to people that if this area is lacking and potentially could turn people way, I'm willing to work on making it better.

IIRC the issue with SBTD questions was that some people thought they were basic questions that a reading of the rules would have solved.  In short, I think they were accusing him of not reading the rules, and just asking questions.  There was also, IMO, some blowback from some ealier issues he had when he was new.  IIRC he was also using a French translation of the rules.  I don't know his proficiency with that language or if it was a contributing factor.

I actually think most of the problems were an acute situation due to differing personalities.  As opposed to a chronic 'that's a stupid question' type situation.Â

Well, nyjastul69, I was and still am using a french PH but all my other books are in english and I see many of the questions I had asked, most recently the Two-Weapon fighting issues being answered or even having an entire article to them. In said article, it was even said the rules "did" need clarification, so I do NOT think those were basic questions. Some questions I also asked on the fly, as I do not carry my books with me to work and the SRD does not answer everything. My profiency with French land English language is also not a concern ( Bachelor's in French Literature in an English-speaking university ).

The point about when I was new and impatient is well-taken, however...

Back to the Campaign idea.  Who's DMing and can I get in?  I also enjoyed Shoe's accounting of the RHOD and would like to see more interresting reports like it.
