Hi everyone!
Has anybody developed an alternate set of crafting rules? It seems to me that under the RAW, a weaponsmith or jeweler simply could not make a living. And PCs are totally SOL. Things just take too long to make! Has anyone tackled this problem?
Or, if no-one has, can anyone tell me how long it DOES take to make a sword, for example, both normal and masterwork. I've made studded leather armor before, but it was far from a professional job and I only devoted my rare free time to it, so that's not an indication.
Maybe I'll look on wikipedia. Anybody got any ideas?

Having been an armor smith for various LARP groups, I can tell you most armor takes a rather long time to make. Using metals sheets (which substantially cuts down the time) and cutting then hand-shaping them into a clamshell breastplace/cuirass takes a minimum of a week. That's working as a full-time job. Tooling leather takes between a couple of days to several weeks depending on the amount of detail, whether or not there are articulated segments, studding, etc. Crafting real maille takes a ridiculous amount of time (just turning and cutting enough wire for a coat of maille took well over 5 months putting in 2-3 hours a day).
I've also worked as an apprentice cabinetmaker. Finishing the cabinets in our kitchen has taken hundreds of hours and we're using very minimal detail (cherry-wood inserts on the lower cabinets and etched-glass cutouts on the upper cabinets). Granted, each time a piece is finished then installed it looks and functions superbly (far superior to the mass-produced junk drawers you can buy at the home improvement centers).
Crafting seems to be intentionally a headache in the d20 rules simply because player characters are "adventurers." Why become an adventurer if you're going to sit around all the time working in a forge/alchemy lab/bowery?
My players use magic item creation feats nearly to the point of abuse. They shudder at the though of spending the time to craft mundane gear.
