I've heard people talk about The Shackled City, and I was able to flip through a copy last night at the FLGS. However, I'm reluctant to drop $60 on an adventure path before I know more about it. I'm looking for insight as to just how good it is. Thanks.

I place it next to RHOD good............
Classic monsters and lots of dungeon crawls.....even some demons.
I like this story better then Age of the Worms but thats just me.
Can't give too much here as there are players here that are playing it...but I find that this adventure you can drop pretty much into any setting as long as you have a big city to use as Calderon(sp...?)
I give it 2 thumbs up!

I have the adventure and i've just started playing through it (about 5 game sessions). I've read it entirely.

This looks like the best commercial adventure that i've seen. The plot has depth and is interesting, there are numerous groups that evolve within the story arch, railroading is not too intense, there are numerous nice colored maps, the NPCs have background and detail, really it's good. One poster said that there was too much dungeon crawl for his taste, you might want to think about it if you're not a dungeon crawl fan. There's more to the adventure path than that, but you have a few of them in there.

$60 is a high price, but it's an entire campaign you have in there, level 1 to 20. From my standpoint, it's well worth the price. Apart form the dungeon crawl post, i think i've read only positive comments on this adventure path. Personally, i recommend it.

With adventures like Shackled City and RHoD...Price is a rather Nebulous issue.  I bought RHoD, list price 24.95, and between that and  the rulebooks (which, realistally, you only need DMG, PHB, and MM) thats about 115$..for that cost I have kept 5 other people entertained for 5 hours a week, for the past 5 months!  20 Games, at 5 hours, is 100 hours of entertainment-or 1.50 an hour (which equals thirty cents per hour per player...compare that to just about anything else in the hobby world)

We are starting Shackled City next, for 60 dollars I expect nearly a year worth of gaming...

(yes, this is example in not exactly accurate in my case, as I have spent easily another Ten Grand in books and miniatures...but hey-I got it to spend!)

We're been playing it with our home group. Going kinda slow, we're still 2nd level after 10 sessions or so.

I'm currently playing this campaign, I'm @ 8th level and I've very much liked so far.
Though, you should know that this is my very first experience in D&D roleplaying (or in any roleplaying at all).

Thanks for all he info. I'll consider picking it up once our current campaign (a homebrew) is finished.

Hi,

I joined a group on SCAP (I began at 7th level on the 3rd or 4th installment, "Zenith trajectory") at the end of march 2006, and the others players had been playing in this campaign for about a year, I think (we play once every other week, for about 4 to 4 1/2 hours).

It's a lot of fun, and I sure think that the 3 "Dungeon / Paizo" adventure path so far are worth it !

And if you wander on Paizo's site, you'll see that lots of people have enjoyed this campaign, that lots of people expect "Age of worms" to come as a hardcover also, and have begun playing "Savage tide".

The other nice thing is that you can get a huge amount of info on SCAP on Paizo's messageboard..., since you have a subsection dedicated to "shackled city" : DM's advice, ideas on sidetreks, idea on how deadly are some encounters, ideas on adapting things to new books...

I really think it's enjoyable (I don't own it, though, but I own at least half of its adventures in Dungeon, and I subscribed a few months ago for "Savage tide"), and HOURS of play...

The HC book earned a few ENnies, last year, BTW...

It's good, but not the best.  1 thing that could really improve it is if the damn appendix of monsters was in the order you encounter them rather than in alphabetical order.... most annoying thing ever.
It's worth getting, but not for $60.  That's an outrageous price and paizo should be ashamed.
Pick it up on ebay for half that.
Seriously, I don't know where gaming companies get off charping over $50 for a book.  It ticks me off so much.  Eat for a week or buy a book.....
thanks ebay and discount online superstores!

I agree that the appendix organization is far from optimal. For starters, it should be in a separate booklet, like the maps.

As for the price, i don't really agree that it's too much. In fact, i don't think that the "$60 for a book is too much" is a strong argument in itself, since it depends on what you get in the book. For a 20-page, low quality book, $60 is extorsion. Shackled City is a 400 page (without the maps), high-quality, full campaign book. $60 is fine by me. The fact that you get like easily 4-5 times the quantity of stuff that you have in many other adventures shouldn't count in the price since it's a single book? How much do you have to spend if you buy separate adventures, to take your PCs from level 1 to level 20? The recommended price on RHoD is $25 which takes you from level 5 to 10. Four times that, means $100. I don't really get this criticism on the Shackled City price.

This being said, if you can get it for less than $60, good for you. I got it for 50-55 Canadian dollars myself, which means about US$45, if recall correctly. I hear that Paizo's online prices are quite high and that you get usually get much better prices elsewhere.
