Pursuant to the recent threads that provided interesting points of view on some subjects, it'd be interesting to hear more questions and opinions on different subjects, modest or not, on how people play their game.

First question from me (definitely in the modest category ): how do you identify a mounted PC on the battle mat? Do you use a mounted mini to replace the PC's usual mini with it, do you actually leave the PC's mini on the mounted mini, do you simply place the PC's mini at the center of the four squares he occupies, ...? What about mounted orcs or other NPCs, and so on?

Also, do you use Snig on Worg for goblins mounted on worgs, considering that a goblin mounted on a conventional worg is supposed to use the space of a medium creature instead of a large creature?

I don't use too many mounted minis.

I do use my collection of miniatures as inspiration for my NPCs though. Instead of crafting an NPC and then hoping to find a miniature to match, because I have well over a thousand metal and plastic miniatures, I tend to find a cool mini and then imagine a story and build for that miniature.

Soon, in my campaign, the PCs will meet Tasster and Tesster, dwarf thundertwin blessing sons of the last dwarven king of Tethyamar.

Because I have two ThunderTusk Riders, I decided to make both of the dwarves experts at mounted combat and able to ride Dire Boars. It was fun to build these guys into riding experts seeing as how, if I was just coming up with their stats, I wouldn't have done that.

If one of them would dismount, I have a Dwarven Defender and a Dire Boar as seperate miniatures.

I can do the same thing with the Gith on Red Dragon. I have a Gith and a Red Dragon mini too.

Same with Hafling riding the war dog. (Hyena and halfling minis)

I'm sure, sooner or later, WoTC will release a riderless horse mini.

---

But what if you don't have 1,500 odd miniatures and thousands of dollars worth of terrain that you built by hand because you're far too into this hobby like me?

---

I'd say that many of your options would work.

You can walk into a craft store like Trader Horn and get a wood disk that is roughly a large base mini.

Paint it black, and put a thick, wide bottle cap, or something similar, on top of that base. (Paint the bottle cap brown first)

You end up with a sort of brown pedestal, but, a mini can sit on top of it, and it's the right size for a mount.

Or, you could just sit the mini on the base...

Or, as you said, you could just put the mini in between the four squares, but, I think it'd be less confusing to at least double stack the mini on a 40mm base (which, as I said, is easy to buy at Wal Mart or Trader Horn in the craft section, as wood).

PC Stronghold

When the PCs took over the above stronghold, they hired a Paladin Griffon Rider of Bahamut. (Mounted Griffon Cavalry) but, if she gets off the Griffon, I use the Divine Crusader of Corellon and the regular Griffon.

Ultimately, I think your best bet is a brown pedestal on a black 40mm base that a 25mm mini can sit on top of and move around. It won't be totally realistic, but, it represents what you need, it's easy to make, and it's modular.

Completed good trades with Demagogue, PigSnot, DoB, and Alepulp.

Now that there are some actual mounted DDM mini's I'm using those and switching them out depending if the character is mounted or unmounted. Prior to the mounted mini's I was putting the mini in the middle of four squares.

There are some cool large sized tokens with pictures of horses on them you can get - I can't remember who makes them off the top of my head but I will try and track them down.

I usually use a centaur or a mounted DDM. However, in a pinch, you know those cube of dice you can buy in gaming stores? The black caps are perfect 10'x10' squares and are great mounts and are very easy to move your main fig on and off if mounting is an issue.

I glued a picture of a horse to a 40mm base, and each PC puts his character on it when mounted.

Similarly, I use the same thing (a 40mm base) when a PC enlarges.

I picked up a Tube of Horses from the craft store and glued some to 40mm bases and some to 50mm bases (and am in the process of repainting the really ugly ones). There's enough room (due to positioning) to place a medium mini on the horse's base. Voila! Instant mounted mini without all the hassle of doing a lot of chopping. I also occasionally use the DDM mounted pieces or Rakham Lion Knights when there's a low likelihood or dismount or for situations where people have specialized in mounted combat. The Halfling Outrider also gets quite a bit of play since there's usually a gnome or halfling in the party and they typically ride dogs.

For NPCs...depends on the NPCs. I use various goblins that have been modified to sit on Timber Wolves, Hyenas, and in one case Snig on a Harbinger Worg to represent mounted goblins. I also have corresponding seperate minis in case they dismount. I've been very pleased with the usability.

Other minis depend on the situation. I have a few custom mounted minis (Orc Mauler riding a Destrechan) but for the most part I just set the rider on the mount's base as best as can be or leave the rider off and just use the mount to represent the whole thing.

I would love to see one or two non-rare mounted minis since I just can't afford to acquire enough Mounted Paladins, Thundertusk Cavalry, or Valenar Nomads to stage a really spiffy mounted combat scene

I have started using the dice box lids for mounted PCs. Take up about a large space on grid, and keeps the character easily indentified.

I keep looking for tubes of horses type things, but all seem to big around here.

I will often just use index cards cut to the right size. I put a mini on the card and then it's mounted. It ain't pretty, but given how fragile mounts tend to be when the fireballs start flying, it's good to be able to get the "horses" out of there.

I've now glued up a toob of horses with some large square bases. Left enough room for a PC/NPC to be able to stand next to it. Seems to be working quite well, though it has started me down the slippery slope of using non DDM Minis. Plus my daughter had great fun making them with me.

I kept a half dozen of the bases to use as generic type mounts which are coming in really really handy. With the $$ I`ve spent buying minis, I don't know I didn't bother toget them before. Much nicer than old dice lids. Last attack by goblins on worgs was much easier, just dump the gobbo on a flat base. I am going to get a few more of different sizes for different size steeds.

I think next step will be based off Vrecknidj and will blue tack stats onto flat bases as appropriate.

That's a fantastic idea. There's been so many times I've seen people have to look up what their horse can do over and over or have to refer to another shet of paper. This would be much better, although probably not good for small creatures on medium mounts. Nice suggestion, Bert the Troll.

I have not had too many opportunities for horses anyway, but I really like the idea of the conflict chips.  That may be a cheaper way to go.

It depends.

HORSES
My wife and I made some basic wooden horses a couple years ago. We painted them a few different colors. Very basic painting (solid one color for each horse--no detail for saddle, eyes, etc.) We did this before 3.5, so the horses took up two squares like they used to.

More recently, for 3.5, I bought large sized wooden bases (before DDM increased size of bases for larges) and painted them black and glued them to the bottom of the horses.

These "horses" have a flat back that a medium sized mini fits on nicely. They now take up four squares.

GOBLINS/WORGS
zenthrus did a very nice favor for me after I found out that Snig, Worg Rider was a large. I gave him some DDM in exchange for his services. He converted 6 timberwolves and 6 silent wolf goblins into medium goblin worg riders. I acquired some more timber wolves and silent wolf goblins to represent the creatures when separated from each other.
