Subject: question on DC (do not read if you play in my shield of the north game )

Here is the situation. I have a MOHRG with three levels of lurking terror(Libris mortis)that will be throw agaist the party. I am not touching the stats, but I am switching up a few feats. He will have Ablity focus paralysis and Improved paralysis(libris mortis). (losing alertness and lighting reflexes) I believe this increases the DC of his paralysis by 7 (4 for the improved paralysis and 3 for the lurking terror levels)making the new total 24. I don't believe the +2 from Ablity focus stacks with the +4 from improved paralysis. Is this correct? If they stack I might drop the improved paralysis and use something else. A DC 26 would be a bit too scary for the party.

Unfortunately I think it does. There is nothing in the descriptions that says they don't and since they are both an untyped bonus, they stacks. There may be some errata on this, but I don't know it off hand.

Yeah, I think that they stack too. Maybe you could include in a previous encounter's treasure an ointment that renders the user temporarily immune to paralysis. If the players sell it, too bad for them. If one character keeps it in a hard-to-get-to backpack, and he gets paralyzed, too bad for them. If the players figure out that they'll need to use it, and give it to someone who is most likely able to help other paralyzed characters, and maybe keep the fight from becoming a TPK, good for them.

If players gave something like that up, I'd be shocked. That would be very useful as a one shot item to have.

What is the APL of the party, anyways? If it's high enough, it may not be as much of a problem.

For this encounter at the start of the next session the party is at about 80% strenght. almost full hit points, but daily uses are down. Four party member at 9th level one is at 8th. The Ecounter level is only 11 so it is not out of line in that way. the parties fort save range from 4-12, but we use action points. so with the extra 2d6 the Palidin and fighter are pretty safe, but the thief,and magic users are at risk. I do fell a a bit uneasy about the high fort save, but instead of changing it I have decided to created an exit stragty if the party all becomes paralsysed.

Don't know about that problem.

It sounds like your characters should be fine. With 5 players and only APL+2 they should be fine. Even if he takes out one charater a round, they should take him out damage wise before the end. I'm not sure about your set up for the encounter, but unles everyone rolls poorly I think your characters should have it covered.

He is a recurring villian of sorts. they first fought him when he was still a living serial killer. His uncle in an attempt to raise him instead ended up with the undead. The party spent the last session clearing out the uncle mansion of horrors and now is in the sub basement with only a couple more rooms to check out. So once they bypass one more trap they will be in a hidden evil shrine and face the final battle, and also hopeful save a couple of friendly recurring NPC's. That is why they are not going in fresh.

Ah. That seemed fine, I meant "set up" as will they be jumped, trapped, ambushed, automatially surrounded, etc, bu your post covered what I was getting at. It sounds like a very reasonable encounter for a group, and I've seen a lot that are worse and the PCs come by without relying on too much luck. The PCs should have fun.

I'd also like to say I like the use of the serial kille becomng a morgh. I haven't seen that alot as most undead that are created due to the actions in their lives have been dead for a long time. Cool plot.

Another possibility is for the morgh to try to capture the PCs- that is paralize one then move onto the next, rather then going for the kill each time- though coming up with a "PCs are captured" senario could be a lot of work. Also, it would be an odd undead that went for the capture rather then the kill.

That's the tactic I would use anyways, even if I was going for the kill. Going for the kill would just get it killed in the end. A paralyzed character is a threat removed, and a round taking out a character would leave the other PCs free to kill it. I don't think it can afford to give them free, unthreatened full rounds while it coup de grace or whatever the paralyzed PC.

That is my escape plan. If the big hiter get paralized then he will simply try to capture the entire party. the background is consistant with him wanting to keep the party alive to be tortured. There are two other party members that are elsewhere at the moment. It may be up to them to save the party before they are torture to death or insanity.

the reason you are losing paragraphs is INSTEAD of pushing the all simple enter key, now you must breakyour text with BR inside these little thingies <> for example

not until the 27th. We normally play once a month all day Sunday (approx 11:00am to 8:00PM), but with Christmas this break is 6 weeks.

Encounter when great. The morhg was finished off by the last non-paralysed member of the party. the party rouge three a dagger and ended it just after it had paralzed the battle sorceror. The Paladin had managed to get rid of the zombies(with a couple turn attempts) before he succomded to the paralized. The great thing was dispite coming within an inch of losing the fight the party took almost no damage what so ever. The morgh was using spring attack and concetrating on paralizing.

Nice. I bet that became a real nail biter at the end. It's good when a character can shine by saving the party.
