| My friend just bought an overhead projector for his new TV and it got me to wondering about the possibilities.
It's my understanding that you can hook up your computer to this projector if wanted. That being the case couldn't a guy download maps and project those downward onto a large table top and do on the fly editing as a GM during a campaign. You would still use minis for the representations but the possiblilities with the maping would really start to open up. And no worried about when someone spills a drink either. | | John

| Here you go:
Coolest. Gaming Set-up. Ever thread
Scroll through the pages and look at all of the different setups. I've been keeping up with that thread since is started back in 2005. One day, I'd like to have that type of setup
The cool thing about it is that you can stick your map in photoshop, create a layer above the map that is just black, and then use the eraser tool to erase the portions of the map that the PC's can see.
Oh you lucky people with your projectors!
The only downside I see for it that makes me hesitant to do this (well besides the cost) is that it seems like you have to keep your room kind of dark in order to see the projection on the table. And I have terrible night vision, I need lots of light to see my notes.

| | As said, you can do that. I haven't played a game with a map, but I did participate in a campaign where a DM used his laptop to expose the map as we saw it. It had been uploaded into Illustrator and each room was made into a separate layer. It was really cool way to play. If this was combined with the overhead projector, thatwould be awesome. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| A friend of mine from another state does the projector thing for his group.
He has it rigged to his ceiling above his gaming table too. Works very well for him.
We're even worse... we use dozens of boxes of master maze, grass terrain, ruin terrain, a full tabletop town... PASTE - www.jpoppa.com/daggerfalls.htm ...a giant 2' tall keep made from the same stuff...
The guy who DMs the other campaign just used his hot wire cutter to make the Undying Temple (twisted tower w negative energy ball) from the end of CotSQ for our campaign finale the other day.
Terrain adds a huge amount to tactical combat. The projection is great. The stuff we do takes more time and money, but it even adds the 3D element to the terrain.
I had a player duel one of my NPCs from ledge to ledge while the PC spider climbed on that giant 2' tall, keep w bridges that I was just mentioning. When the bad NPC fell off the building, I just had to measure how far he fell...
I mean, the PCs were climbing in and out of windows... good stuff.
Whatever you can do to add terrain and minis it will tend to make the combat more tactical and less "hack-n-slash".
A variety of terrain, and larger battlefields, will benefit different types of PCs, and classes that dominate one session won't dominate the next.
Plus, it's a fun hobby to craft things, even if it's just crafting a projected map. | | Completed good trades with Demagogue, PigSnot, DoB, and Alepulp.
