| If my party is lined up in a 5 foot wide hallway and my wizard is behind my fighter and the target/enemy is say 10ft in front of the fighter( one big line). Can I cast a spell against the enemy ( I know no cones, rays or area unless I hit the fighter too) such as magic missle or some other ranged spell? | | Champion of Grape Juice. Its delicious. | |

| | Yes. As long as you have line of sight you can target a person. While you are correct about cones, you can shoot a person with a ray as well in this example, except the target has cover (+4 AC) vs your attack. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| It's like shooting an arrow. An archer wouldn't hit the fighter if he shot in that situation. You are assumed to miss the fighter and in trying to avoid the fighter you decrease your chance to hit (hence the cover bonus). They removed in 3.5 the soft cover rules.
And you're welcome. Glad to help. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| As gss_000 said, you wouldn't hit the fighter with a ray. There is an alternate rule in the DMG however about possibly hitting the cover in case you miss the target because of the cover.

Sky
That alternate rule sounds fun in theory but tends to suck in practice. As with critical fumbles it ends up causing far too much damage to PCs and far too little to NPCs.

| Keep in mind also, you can hit a target with magic missile as long as you can see even something as small as his earlobe. So if you're in the middle of a huge battle & want to hit a guy deep into the crowd, if you can see his pinky finger inside the crowd, your missiles hit. It won't matter how many people are infront of you.
This is kind of why I prefer to think of Magic Missiles looking like they do in the Baldur's Gate videogames. Their balls that shoot and and curve around in the air as they head towards the target. The "dart" looking image that the books illustrate MM's looking like makes it hard for me to imagine them weaving around obstacles while shooting forward at the target.

| Well, Baldur's Gate is the best D&D representation to date
I've always pictured magic missile as d4s flying unerringly to strike their target | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Champion of Dwarven Thunderlashers Knight of the Large Dire Chicken Have/Want List Trade References | |

Me: "You see the BBEG cast a spell."
*hurls 4 d4's at Bob*
Bob: "Ouch!"
Me: "Bob, you get hit for 15 points of damage."

| Interesting, I've always pictured them as miniature (Golf Pencil sized) sidewinder missiles with D4's as the missile head...

| | Since you are making attack rolls, you can critical miss and also critical hit with a ray spell. Handle it exactly as you would a crit miss or sucess with a weapon. For me, that means just a plain miss or potential double damage. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow
