Do sudden metamagic feats cost any extra spell slots to cast? Specifically the sudden maximize feat.

No they don't. The feat descriptions in Complete Arcane say you can only use the feat "Once per day, without increasing the level of the spell".

You just have to remember to only use the Sudden feat 1x a day.

For what you need for them, Sudden metamagic feats are crazy if you think about it. I just DMed a game (LG, so the mod was written by someone else) where the final encounter had someone with a Sudden feat. I always felt like I was intentionally kicking the players when they were down by using it. They are definitely much more useful for NPCs than PCs because of the 1/day aspect, but a build around them can be fun.

Yeah, I've always found that when I'm GMing many of the NPC spellcasters seem a little less than impressive when the PC's face off against them. I've been considering using a sudden metamagic feat or two with them just to give them the respect they deserve in the heat of the moment.

For my own PC though I've been looking into something like this once higher levels are achieved.

Combat casting Substitute Energy Sudden Maximize Split ray (w/ easy metamagic applied to it)

Now whether it be a Sorcerer or a Wizard, by the time the character reaches 9th level it would have at least 5 feats. If a sorcerer, it would have to wait till 10th level to take full advantage of this combo cause a 5th level slot will be required.

When this combo of feats is used a 4th level orb of (let's say fire) would be maximized to somewhere around 60pts of damage and with sub energy could be altered to another type of energy to deal with creatures who have immunities to the orb of choice. Split ray with the easy meta is gonna cost the extra slot but will double the output of the damage to 120pts. Now pair this character up with another that specializes in Hold person and Hold monster spells and your rays will be doing criticals. WooHoo 240pts of damage at 10th level. "Take that you pesky giant, and don't come back now, ya here!"

A pure wizard would have extra feats by then too and could possibly sudden empower also for an additional 15pts of dmg per ray on average. With the critical hit that's an extra 60pts. Now we're up to 300pts of, no save, no SR, damage at 10th level.

It's a once a day attack, but man... what a difference it could make!

Realize that it could mean the straight out death of any character, especially if it happens in round 2 or 3 when people are down hit points. If the characters of 7-8th level (for facing a 10th level caster), it will kill any caster, and most likely any non-tank in round 1. If you want to deal with your PCs, have fun.

I'm not saying I'd ever unleash that kind of terror on any of the PC's, just saying it appears to be a legal and rediculously powerful combination of spells and feats.
