| | Maybe I missed a book somewhere, but where is it explained what a swift action is, and how does it differ from a free action? | | Champion of Devas Ref list: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5179(42+ completed trades/sales)

| Swift & immediate actions are explained in the Spell Compendium
book. They are probably explained in other books too, I'm just not sure
where.
A swift action is basically a free action...they are the same thing.
The difference though is a free action refers to anything you do that
doesn't take a move action or standard action to do (like talking or
dropping a weapon). A swift action is for spells that don't require a
move or standard action. So a swift spell is instantaneous and you can
also cast a standard action spell & make a move action.
The swift spells are weak spells but they are higher level spells. My
players use them all the time. They can be annoying for DM's, but they
really are helpful for players.

| I especially love Rhino Charge as a swift action spell. Using it with the Paladin Charging Smite ability resulted in 37 damage with a Paladin of only level 5. What a combination | | Please donate BLOOD at http://www.monstersgame.co.uk/ac=vid&vid=11018554 Champion Of Kaz the Minotaur Knight of ALL Draconians. | Since they are not in the core books, they are usually reprinted whenever they come up. The first time I recall seeing them was in the Complete Adventurer.
Oh, and while essentially Swift and Free actions are the same, there is one distinct and important difference. You can only do one swift action each round, and an immediate action counts against your next round's use of swift actions (if you are looking for a great example of an immediate action, it's the spell Feather Fall). There is no hard limit on how many free actions you cn do in a round, just what is reasonable as judged bu individual DMs. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow
