| You know, the only time I feel like I have an issue is when I mix and match minis and non-minis. When half the map is covered in minis, but the cool boss is a misshapen coffee can, that gets to me. Whereas, if they're all nickels, quarters, gummy bears, and dice, I have no real issue
I've occasionally had to yell at myself as a dm when I thought about substituting the monsters I /wanted/ to add to the adventure with monsters that I have minis for.
In the end I just bit the bullet and mix, but it does irritate me

| Well, I was running Red Hand of Doom. There was a greenspawn razorfiend, and the mini had not come out yet. I didn't really have a good proxy. I used a medium green dragon resting on an oreo cookie base. Because the people I was playing with were almost all completely new to D&D after DDM came out, they didn't have much experience when odd things were used as proxies. To this day, they still call the greenspawn razorfiend the "Oreo Monster".
While I am a bit more tolerant of having non-DDM proxies or proxies from things that are kind of close but not really, my group seems kind of spoiled by all the money I have spent on DDM. | | "Look to God and live." | | In terms of using proxies, I don't find there is a problem. What I did notice is that I find it frustrating now with other systems or in D&D games without maps to gestalt combats. I find myself really liking knowing exactly what I can and can't do without having to rely on a GM who may or may not, from my point of view, arbitrarily allow my actions. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| Just pick up some spare SWM and DDM minis and give them an extreme X-acto makeover...voila! Steampunk
I'm very spoiled these days when it comes to minis. I'm using the Chainmail Shadow Priest for a cleric of Cuthbert in our current campaign and I'm irked that his shield has the wrong symbol (my Cleric of Cuthbert is currently MIA: I need to hunt him down and repaint). I also really need a Hydra (the Reaper Hydra is sadly anemic).
Granted, in a pinch I can easily run combat on the fly sans map or minis. Minis just allow for a streamlined visualization of the 3.5 rules (which are, after all, based on 1" square grid combat). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? | I have no problem in using oreo cookies as proxies, but not for any important NPC. The players all target the oreo creature for some reason.

| Spoiled rotten, absolutely, especially if one of the gamers has an obscene (read 4 digits or higher) collection of minis.
I'd kill to run Mass-battles with Zenako's group...

| I'm spoiled. My groups are spoiled. I doubt I'll ever go back to not using minis. I also picked up dreamblade/star wars/others for future future campaigns. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer." The first time I played a mage who had fireball the DM used chocolates to represent a variety of orcs, goblins, etc. We had to eat our kills. That day I learned the price of magic.

| We're not spoiled, we've just had our expectations raised. Thanks to
DDM we expect more than jelly beans, checkers, and soup cans on the
battlemap.
This is no bad thing IMO.

| Sulaco brings up a good point. When expectations are raised, it's hard to go back to what you had before. I've seen it in other areas, like metal spell templates, spray bottles, map use, etc. You can get by on the basics, but why should you if you don't have to? | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | And that is another good point. You can have all the flashy gismos and latest gewgaws you want, but if the story stinks it doesn't matter at all. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow
