Hey guys,
I was starting up a new d&d game and actually get to be a player (score, it's been a while).  I was thinking back on spells, and I kinda-sorta recall a 2nd edition cantrip that counted quantities to within a certain tolerance (i.e. You could count that jar of jellybeans via the spell to within +/- 10 or something like that).  I was gunning for a LN Wizard that had spent a good deal of time doing accounting/clerical work and I thought the spell might fit me well.

Does anyone remember that spell and/or which book I can find it in?  I think posting spell text from old editions may qualify as some sort of infringement, but I've got a number of 2nd edition books floating around at home that I might be able to dig it out of if someone could point me the right way.Â

Thanks for your time.

I'm pretty sure that spell was in the Complete Wizard's Handbook. I have a copy I can check when I get home tonight.

No books with me, but IIRC it was from the 2nd Ed Tome of Magic. I think it was one of the 'Nahal' spells. And BTW, who's responsible for letting you out of OT?

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

I've been sneaking out more and more

Actually, I had sort of a bad year and a half for d&d in general (most of the games I was with were having issues... lots of work got in the way, etc). Now that I'm actually getting a lot more gaming in my desire to chat about d&d in some context other than "man my games have been frustrating" has been on the rise and I've been poking around these forums a whole lot more.

Thanks for the replies, I think I've got a complete wizards at home that I can start checking.

Glad to hear that things are working out better for you.  I'll check the ToM tonight if I can remember to.

Heya Diomedes,

The spell in question is called Hornung's Guess, from the (2nd Edition) Tome of Magic, pages 17 and 19.

Cheers,

Dagonet

(Kind of neat to see many of the 3rd Edition Metamagic Feats show up in the Tome as actual spells. . .)

I would have thought Prestidigitaton would have covered that appication, but it's flavor is neat anyways. I need to check it out.

Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

You know, I come from a long tradition of prestidigitation being completely and totally useless (search me, but it always comes off that way).

Anyhow, I've actually seem to found a group that is interested in Role Playing (as opposed to say, hacking to bits everything that moves) and I wouldn't mind burning some spell slots on fun flavorful things rather than more traditionally "useful" picks.

My greatest fear is that the DM doesn't understand how expensive being a wizard is.  He was talking about how a gold piece should be "worth" something.  Meanwhile I'm thinking, "and I need 100 gp per spell level per spell to copy it into my book... ouch".

Ah well, I plan on just kicking back and having fun with it.  Things will probably work out for the best.

I remember those days. It's why I'm glad they made cantrips. Now you know if it's a 0th level spell, it's useless.

Ask your DM if he will reduce the cost of spells for scribing purposes only if gold is going to be rare. Not really being "treasure" but more of a class feature, this could really hurt you in the long run.
