| 1. I guess I didn't explain myself very well. I need ideas for hazzards for a final battle in a dungeon (underground aquiduct). There are vampires so I'm weary about using rushing water.
2. I'm not so keen on buying any books or product.
3. The ideas from the DMG aren't what I'm looking for. | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. Champion of Half-Golems Knight of Golems "This world is made for love and peace" - Trigun "anyway..shadow..you've figured women out. KUDOS." - raye_kino16 | |

| aquiduct... but no water traps..... hmmmmm. how about this:
For the Big Bad Guy's room: explosive fumes that are released into the tunnel/dungeon.... kind of like a "self destruct sequence".
If things don't go the BBG's way... He/she/it starts the trap and escapes or with his/het/it's last breath curse the PCs while setting it off... Or the PCs can find the mechanism after vanquishing the BBG and be left with the choice of flipping the switch or not.
The PCs would then have to either bolt for the exit, or find the BBG's escape route. If they are underground when the fumes go off.... You could work out the damage caused by the explosion, but I'd just play it that any PC not killed by the fire damage is crushed by the cave-in.
'Coarse a good DM will rig it that the PCs escape if they can't get out on their own

| Here's my ideas...
One- standing water. Make them fight in about 3 inches of standing water, with 1/2 the room as a pool. Vampires are fine to hide there, and most PC's will forget about the running part, and get ambushed. Put a ledge somewhere, so they have reason to look up.
Falling G-cube. My favorite trap, it's always hilarious, and deadly too.
Last idea, if you go with the standing water, use electricity. A lightning bolt to the ground hits everybody...

| The ideas I was playing around with were: 1. Each 5 foot square (or every second one) has a possibility of dropping out from underneath anyone who stands on it for more than a round. They would fall into a large pool of water (30 ft down) and have to swim to the edge and climb back up.
2. Electric Floor
3. A Wall of force that shoots out from one part of the wall and straight accross. Pushes out things not in it's direct path, crushes things in it's path aginst the wall on the other side (3d6).
With the main fighting floor being covered in water, I have a bad feeling about spells changing it into rushing water. The main vampire is sitting on the second floor (the observation view of the colloseum) and plays the flute to activate the main trap, summon the Chaos Beast, and call more help. This is where the vampire lives so I don't think he'd be willing to destroy his home just to kill a couple of adventurers so explosions and cave-ins are out. I already have a funny G-Cube moment in my adventure. Twice might be unfunny and just annoying. I was always liking the idea of moving cogs and being able to crush or be crushed. | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. | Rope bridges are always fun.
A slippery set of single-file stairs with moss and trickling water can be fun too. Especially when you attack the party with Bats/Stirges/insect swarm etc... while they are supposed to be climbing.
Standing water that has a sickening stench that the party has to make periodic saves.
Trying to go down a slick incline covered in bat guano while battling spiders is cool too. | | Never teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of time and it annoys the pig.

| Gases lots of gases! Have pipes that release effects like: Stinking Cloud, Cloudkill...etc.
Use effects that vampires are generally immune to, so poisons, death effects and nausea/fatigue/fear effects are all really fun to scare the PC's with.
And seeing as Vampires can turn into a cloud form, they can then blend in with all the other gases in the room.
Also enough gases and concealment can come into play, like obscuring mist. | | "I was sittin' here eatin' my muffin, drinkin' my coffee, replayin' the incident in my head, when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity." - Jules Winnfield Sales/Trades Bad (1): Ironfist Boulderbender Trades/Sales completed (8.): Danthl, Dafrca, Garyaxe, qillan_dvra, realmaster, Vandal_Savage, cavedweller, unearthed arcana. | | Just remember to factor these hazards into the CR of the encounter. | ...other ideas... 1. if you're using standing water, drop an Otiluke's Freezing Sphere spell onto the water prior to the BBEG or his minions stepping into it - freezes to a depth of 6 inches (10' x 10' per caster level) 2. line one (or more) walls with Brown Mold...the vampire won't be affected by the cold damage, and if the PC's use fire against the undead... | | Shottglazz "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand; I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

So if I was to freeze the Pcs in their place, how would that work? Would they have to use an action to break free? If so at what str DC? | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. | | I'd give them a REF based save to see how badly they're stuck - then base the PC's off that...say DC 30 if both feet are stuck, 20 if one is stuck, etc...monks may be able to avoid it entirely with evasion... | | Shottglazz "Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand; I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

| Those are really high save, way too high for this encounter. The Vampire is CR 6 or 7 if I recall from the other thread and al these hazards should bump up the CR by one or two. That means you're looking at a APL 4 or 5 party. If the DC of the save is 30 then you are just saying you want any and all PCs there to be trapped. Heck, even using the sphere a 6th level spell, is above the CR of this encounter (minimum 11th level caster). If you are using this trick, make the DC reasonable likea normal reflex save for a spell of that level.
As for the break DC, it's in the description of the spell. But I would avoid this entirely unless your playes are higher than my assumptions from your descriptions. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | I like the idea of ice and trapping one or two PCs with ice and then adding the effect of reflex saves during their activations. Could I lower the DC a lot and then add it? Or is the idea of ice and slipping and getting stuck still too high a CR? If so I'll pick another one. | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. | It depends on what you are trying to do. Just realize the more rolls you put into the encounter, the harder the encounter is. I don't know your party, so it's really up to you how you can modify this. If your PCs have dex-based characters (archers, rougues, scouts, rangers, etc) then a low DC is trivial. If they are all tanks and ground pounders (fighters, barbarians, knights, melee clerics, etc) this could hose everyone because now it is too hard for them to get to the vampire. Luckily, there are mechanics for getting out of the ice that anyone can do, so it's not as bad as say Evard's Tentacles. For instance, I can see ref save of 15-20 reasonable for this level with a break DC of 20 (not assuming Ottiluke's Sphere which states DC 25). PCs can also break out of the ice by attacking it (a better choice). Check PHB for hardness and DMG for travelling over ice sheets in the terrain section.
Thematically, I think the idea is cool. Executing it is the problem. More than the saves, how are you freezing the ice? You have to find a way that can work in this situation without being too unreasonable (For instance: Why is the vampire using 6th level spells to freeze water but not a more obvious one like chain lightning to kill everyone right there?) and one that will probably be used against you some day (For instance: The vampire used an orb of cold. Later a PC say to you, well, the vampire did it so I'm going to do the same to this monster). | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow
